As you may have heard, Karen O came out with her first solo album, Crush Songs, in early September. The songs on the album mostly concern themselves with the emotions that O was experiencing at the start of fall. O reported on her website that at the time she was crushing a lot, and unsure if she’d ever fall in love again. “They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.”
The music video to the 9th song of the album, “Day Go By”, premiered on Vogue yesterday, and it delivers the message of the album to the fullest. The two minute video, directed by wiissa, follows young lovers roaming around the countryside on a Vespa in what looks like summertime, enjoying each other’s company wherever they go.
The song itself is full of a young-love feel; its soothing vocals and comforting acoustics making Karen’s longing more realistic. It’s a sweet song with the narrator getting what she wants; her “love crusade” is (at least temporarily) met with satisfaction. The video brings us back to that first high school heartthrob – you know, back when everything in life left a bad taste in your mouth (except the sweetheart you would meet with behind the bleachers *wink, wink*)
Ezra Koenig recently interviewed the singer for GQ. He asked if she would ever consider taking a long break from creating music, to which she responded: “Part of me is curious about what would happen if there wasn’t the obligation to release music into the public for a long time. I’ve had that pressure—once you start that conversation with an audience, one of the hardest things is to walk away.”
Aside from her work on the album last year and an Academy Award nomination for best song through 2014 film Her, we haven’t heard any other music news about the singer, but we are eager to see whatever work she does next.
