As a child of the nineties, I have such a soft spot for the toys of my youth. Furbies were somehow cute and creepy at the same time, Skip-Its were practically the only way my mom could get me to exercise, and I'm pretty sure I thought my Lite Brite drawings had one up on Van Gogh's Starry Night.  I've gotten over most of my obsessions because, you know, I grew up or something. Polish artist Katarzyna Majak explores female wisdom in her upcoming solo photography exhibit Women of Power at Porter Contemporary in New York. Fascinated by stereotypical witch imagery, Majak's images show women clutching their objects of power and emanating confidence and strength. The artist claims "A witch is a woman of knowledge who takes a broom and sweeps to cleanse the world," and her subjects seem to be cleansing the viewer with their piercing stares and mysterious objects. What is the true source of artistic inspiration? Is it divine or mystical? Does creativity come from nature, or from your subconscious? It seems the God of Unbearable Boredom breathed inspiration upon artist Nina Katchadourian on a flight two years ago. After spontaneously snapping a shot of herself with a toilet seat cover on her head in the airplane bathroom and noticing its uncanny resemblance to 15th-century Flemish portraiture, Katchadourian decided to create a whole series of these portraits. The "Speakeasy Dollhouse," a Prohibition-era interactive play by Cynthia von Buhler, is puzzling. It’s a participatory work of theater, a whodunit and an unsolved mystery. Audience members are encouraged to study evidence before experiencing the play, which is set in a speakeasy (based on a previously constructed dollhouse set). Most importantly, it’s based on a true story: Von Buhler created "Speakeasy Dollhouse" to try and solve the mystery of her grandfather's unexplained murder, almost a century ago. Read More
