Makeup can be really expensive. Like, $53 for a tube of lipstick expensive. Unless it applies itself, I can't justify spending that much money for it. Drugstore options are fine, but most of those brands don't carry the cool colors high end brands have. Will there ever be a compromise in this age old battle?  Enter: indie makeup. Thanks to the good 'ol internet, people can start their own brands relatively easily. Whether they sell their products on Etsy or an independent website, several of these brands have amassed quite a cult following in the makeup world. Lips 1. Read More
I recently moved to a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and I had to leave more than half my wardrobe at home in Tennessee. It’s been a rough reality because I absolutely love clothes. With fall, my favorite fashion season, approaching, I’ve been worried about how I’m going to stay stylin’ with a significantly reduced collection of clothing. It’s not quite time for me to beg my parents to send me my winter clothes and figure out where to store my short-shorts, so I decided to find a way to make my limited wardrobe stretch into the next few months. I have been wearing at least some form of makeup since I was eleven. Why? When I was eleven, it was mascara for my white-blonde eyelashes and concealer for my pimples. What about now? I don’t think I have a singular answer. I like the ritual of putting on makeup in the morning, I enjoy playing with eyeshadow and lip colors, and I genuinely think I look about 110 percent prettier with makeup on. I wear makeup because it makes me feel good. For me, it’s that simple, a reflex. Read More
The latest issue of Allure has a feature on how to achieve hairstyles popular in the 1970’s. It includes an Afro, which was (and remains) a symbol of Black Power. To model this, they chose to use a white woman. The fact that this ran so soon after the much-publicized criticism of Rachel Dolezal is simply baffling. There’s been TONS of backlash against this ridiculousness. Here's some highlights: Via Twitter Via Instagram Via Twitter Via Instagram In response to this, Allure said, “The Afro has a rich cultural and aesthetic history. Read More
When sewing blogger Cashmerette posted a sketch of bathing suit plans for an upcoming project on Instagram, some troll decided the proper response was body shaming, telling her to “eat less cake.” She responded sassily, posting a lovely shot of herself in a dress she’d sewn and a comment about how her life was pretty awesome already, accompanied by the hashtag #CakeWithCashmerette, and wrote a great post about it on her blog. Her fans and peers have flocked to the hashtag, posting selfies of themselves with cake and other delicious desserts as a quiet protest. Read More
In artist Yolanda Dominguez’s video, “Ninos vs. Moda,” a bunch of wise eight-year-olds are shown various images from fashion campaigns and asked to describe them. The unsurprising results? Women are portrayed as being sick, drunk, in danger, fighting, passed out, even thrown in the trash—and men are superheroes, studying for university, and the bosses of good companies. Women are presented as powerless, while men are powerful; what else is new? Watch the adorable (and revealing) video below.   Via www.latina.com Image via www.latina.com Read More On Bust. Read More
Here’s a crazy stat for you: The 44-year-old founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, is the youngest self-made lady billionaire in history. The business of whittling down women’s waists has been a big deal for a long time, so maybe it’s not too surprising that the person who started the modern restrictive undergarment craze is swimming in moola. But what are Spanx and other body shapers really costing you? New reports tell scary tales of compressed organs, squashed bowels, and numbness and tingling in the legs, all caused by squeezing your tuchus into too-tight spandex. Dr. Read More

Most of our dads grew up in an even more intense culture of masculinity than our friends and brothers, and it was a culture that didn’t exactly allow for a dude to learn about putting up a ponytail unless he had long hair himself. That’s why Denver salon owner Calli Heubl-Bodilis’s “Beer and Braids” nights are such an awesome idea. Heubl-Bodilis discovered the need for a workshop like this when she realized how many more fathers are one-on-one with their kids than they used to be. “Dads today are so much more hands-on. Read More
