Mel & El are Swell!

BY Emily Rems in Music

I just saw a totally charming little musical that should be required viewing for NYC BUSTies and their besties! Written and performed by super-talented real-life BFFs Melanie Adelman and Ellie Dvorkin , MEL AND EL: SHOW AND TELL grabbed me by the ovaries the minute I walked into the Ars Nova theater . The shows' scenic design consists of a Barbie-pink room decorated with tons of amazing '80s ephemera representing the era when the pair met at age 12. Read More
Did you hate your prom because the music sucked? Tired of dancing to ''Love Shack'' and ''Hey Ya''? (Who isn't?) If you live in Richmond, check out the Punk Rock Prom! It'll be on May 28 at Southside's Plaza Bowl. Your $2 admission benefits the Tinderbox, Richmond's newest DIY art space, opened by members of the Friendly Fire, and victims of the Oregon Hill fire. You can get tickets at Rumors. No matter how cute your date was, bad music sure kills an evening. Read More

Cute Band Alert

BY Lisa in Music

I got your new awesome album right here. Cryptacize hails from Oakland, CA (fans of Deerhoof will recognize guitarist Chris Cohen) and I've been jamming out to their new record, Mythomania, since it came out a couple weeks ago. Its melodies are addictive (like Nedelle Torrisi's vocals) and moments of endearing twee and weirdness shine through the slow-synth jams and catchy, rockin'-pop hooks. They're hittin' the road next week so click through to see if they're taking over your town. Photo by Denny Renshaw Tue. May 12 San Francisco, CA @ Bottom of the Hill Tue. Read More
