Does Riot Grrrl still exist? Has it evolved? It's clear that the movement has had an influence on tons of musicians, zinesters, and grassroots organizers since it began, but just how much of an influence has it had? And what's changed to keep it relevant in 2010? These are just some of the questions the International Girl Gang Underground zine, "a compilation zine that picks up where Riot Grrrl left off," hopes to answer, and they ... San Francisco musician Rykarda Parasol describes her music as rock noir, a sound that evokes film noir mixed with such heavies as the Velvet Underground, Nico, and Leonard Cohen. Younger folks might draw Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and Mark Lanegan comparisons, as Parasol employs a similarly low vocal range to deliver her torrid tales, but she creates her own otherworldly atmosphere by accompanying herself on guitar and piano. Then dive into a “52nd thrill.” Float and meander as the world spins and stirs in a delightfully bizarre haze. Meditate. Breathe. Ride the ... Read More

Oh Taylor Swift.  I hated you during the onslaught of "Love Story;" hated your complete disregard for and desecration of literature ("Cause you were Romeo, I was the Scarlet Letter?"  WHAT IS THAT? It. Doesn't. Make. Sense. Have you read either of those books?  Do you know they both end badly and are completely inappropriate for the subject you're singing about?  Do you know hundreds of young girls are going to read those books expecting some ... Despite the charms of the two boys behind me in the balcony yelling, "don't be a bitch" at various members of the band as they made banter with the audience, Wild Beasts expressed being *most* excited about the two NYC dates scheduled on their first ever tour of North America, which ends with their show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow (2/28.) Coming all the way from their native UK, the boys travelled through Europe and Australia just to come here and ... Read More
