It's been a difficult few weeks for keeping up with current events. First, Dr. Tiller's murder, then the shootings at the Holocaust Museum and now these two lovely bits  of news. The first story is about a man who arranged the rape of his wife through Craigslist ads. Police responded to a call on Sunday of a man entering the couple's home with a knife and raping the wife. During the interrogation, police became suspicious when they noticed no signs of forced entry. Read More
The ladies of Grey Gardens have had quite the resurgence in 2009. I have rediscovered my obsession with them ever since the HBO movie came out earlier this year (I walked around talking like Little Edie for a week after that, but is that so wrong?), so I couldn't be happier to read that yet another Grey Gardens book is being released. Grey Gardens , edited by Sarah and Rebekah Maysles, is a collection of photographs, illustrations, film stills and transcripts of the filmmakers' conversations with the Beales. The full transcript of the film is included in the appendix. Read More

To Infinity and Beyond

ESL Records have released Ancient Astronauts' eclectic new CD, 'We Are To Answer'. The album is a diverse combination of hip-hop, rap, reggae, and trippy remixes. Some of the songs are catchy and danceable while others have that psychedelic, drug-induced vibe that make the listener want to lie back and let it wash over you. This is a true compliment to the album that you can feel like you're on drugs without actually being on drugs, both safe and fun! In all seriousness, the album has a very moving otherworldly, futuristic sound while still remaining true to its hip-hop core. Read More

Nice Hose

It's kind of a miserable day out today. Dreary, drizzly, gray. But don't worry, I know what will make you feel better. Meeting hot firefighters.  Tonight, from 7-10 at The Firestore , the firefighters from the 2010 calendar (now in stores) will be signing autographs and greeting their fans. Unfortunately you can't preview the calendar. (I desperately clicked on the photo of the cover a thousand times before I submitted to this fact.) But methinks they won't disappoint. Read More

Tim Burton At MoMA

BY Web Intern in General

No, this is not an OMGICU sighting. This November, MoMA will be showing what sounds like an incredible retrospective of the director's work. The exhibit will follow Burton through his whole life, starting with rarely or never-before-seen drawings and amateur movies from his childhood and college days. Samples from his personal sketchbooks will be shown as well as drawings, paintings, storyboards, sculptures, puppets, flash animation, figurines and costumes he created while working on his movies.                 In my home state of North Carolina, in the city of Greensboro,  young girls are being paid $1 a day for every day that they go without being pregnant. Normally I wouldn't agree with this type of monetary reward (I was never one of the lucky kids that got paid for stellar report cards growing up; my family went out for Mexican instead) but this program, supported by the Obama administration, seems to be working as a positive reinforcement for teenage mothers. I rolled. It rocked. After my somewhat embarrassing admission a few weeks ago that I couldn't be bike chic because I couldn't ride a bike, I had been not-to-patiently awaiting my Adult Learn to Ride course with Bike New York. Well, it was last weekend and it was fantastic. In just two hours I went from wobbly and terrified to zipping around the paved sports court where we were learning. I guess their method of teaching is a really good one. I'll explain it, but it's disclaimer time - you have to promise not to take what I say as any sort of lesson. Read More
OK, this is pretty great. A Dutch bedding designer, Snurk, partnered with charity to make a line of bedding that looks like cardboard boxes. Orders outside the Netherlands are handled by Dutch by Design, who will donate 30% of the profits to Centrepoint, a UK charity for homeless young people aged 16-25. They ship all over Europe and to the US, and you can contact them if you live in a country they don't list. You do have to buy the pillowcases separately, but it still isn't too incredibly expensive. Besides, it's for a good cause. Read More
We're not saying it's good. We're just saying you have to watch it: Maybe the tightness of the unitard squeezed the talent of right out of his cute butt? Share your own reviews of his performance here, a la Simon Cowell. ~Hannah Video courtesy of youtube. Read More
Unfortunately this isn't a magic trick.  These women are victims gone for good. According to the Toronto Star , the term 'missing woman' refers to an estimated group of 100 million women who 'should be alive but are not, because of unequal access to medical care, food and social services.' Siwan Anderson, an economics professor at the University of British Columbia, has made it her mission to look for the answers as to why the ratio of men to women in developing countries is below the norm.
