No need to celebrate—but today marks the anniversary of the passage of one of many inane laws women have been subjected to over the course of American history, just because they have lady parts. On January 21, 1908, the Sullivan Ordinance was put into effect in New York City, barring the owners of public places from allowing women to smoke on their premises. Even more nonsensical than the idea of outlawing this in the first place is the fact that the law did not stop women from lighting up in general nor even in public, just specifically from smoking in public venues. SPONSORED POST I’m puffing away at my desk, e-cig hanging from my mouth like some reporter from the 40’s in an old Manhattan newsroom, the loud AC unit keeping the early-Summer humidity at bay. We just closed the August issue of BUST and my bosses are on vacation for the week. I’m feeling good about the progress I’m making on the quitting angle. I’ve gone through the wracking cough that accompanies your esophagus getting accustomed to not having smoke shat down it every couple hours or so. Read More

I was thirteen years old—in full teenage rebellion mode, skateboard tucked under my left arm, backpack containing books and homework that would never see the light of day. My friend Caine swaggered beside me in his sleeveless GWAR tee and shaggy mullet, obviously the more accomplished vandal. We lived four doors down from each other on the same street in Richmond, VA’s West End. He pulled out his crumpled box of Marlboro reds and lit a half-flattened stick. “Hey, can I get one of those?” I said with a gesturing nod. Read More
