Last Tuesday, in association with V-Day, Eve Ensler, award-winning playwright of The Vagina Monologues, hosted a panel discussion regarding sexual violence, in the light of the Steubenville rape case. The event sold out in eight minutes. Though it was exciting to know that every seat would filled with engaged listeners, there was something so annoyingly typical about the scene that greeted me: the audience was composed almost entirely of women, with a couple of guys sprinkled here and there. A recent study at Edinburgh University proves that men have a harder time reading other people’s emotions than women do.  Well, this explains a lot. During the study, a group of both men and women were shown pictures of faces and asked numerous questions about them while their brains were scanned. When asked how approachable the people in a photograph seemed, the men took longer to respond. Though they eventually came up with the same results as the ladies, it took them longer to get there. The Occupy Movement is kicking it up a notch. Tomorrow, May 1st, Occupy is calling for a general strike of the 99%, a continuation of the historical May Day, which has been International Workers Day for over a century. Regardless of your political leanings, the hype around tomorrow's events calls for some attention.  In Bryant Park, there will be free food, a free market, public art, the Occupy Library, and a rehearsal for the Guitarmy, which will later be led by Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine. In Madison Square Park, the Free University will pop up. Read More

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Canadian charity organization Rethink Breast Cancer is launching an iPhone/Droid app that encourages women to stay on top of their self-exams:  Your Man Reminder.   The free app features a bevy of buff dudes for your educational…pleasure(?): a shirtless guy of your choice will appear on your phone monthly as if by pec- er, tech magic, to remind you to examine your own boobs with a little TLC (“Touch, Look, Check”). Our first week of tour with CSS has been sooo fun! We are chasing their bus all over the west coast in our charcoal colored Dodge Caravan. This tour we have a drummer with us which is super duper exciting. Lee Free is our drummer, and he is playing a lot of the percussion samples from our record on live drums. We are super happy with the new texture it brings to the show. Blowtorch is at the sound helm again and we are just thrilled to have the family back together. (JD met a few cool vaginas in Portland OR @ The Wonder Ballroom!") Two people came up on stage so far. Read More
Brazilian punky groovesters CSS (above) are hitting the road with MEN, JD Samson’s disco-flavored post-Le Tigre project/performance art collective (below), and you can bet that butts will be shaking and BUST will be stoked. To celebrate their North American tour together, both bands collaborated on a tour-exclusive, limited-edition split 7” (entitled We Are Friends 7") featuring original artwork and brand-new remixes of each other’s songs. Check out this hilarious pie-chart from MadAtoms.com, about what men think about menstruation. It's pretty on point, especially the 12% of men that think periods are dangerous- because they attract bears. I once asked one of my buddies why women aren't allowed to be Navy Seals, and he replied, "Ya know how many missions would be compromised by sharks that were attracted by periods??" This boy was DEAD serious. For shame! These bizarre ideas about periods are examined in Emily Martin's essay, The Egg and The Sperm: How Science has Constructed a Romance Based on Stereotypical Male-Female Roles. Read More
