I know I’m not the only lady who is tired of nerd culture being such a boys club. Video games, comics, and online-discussion forums are bogged down with testosterone. Just take a scroll through a 9gag page to see what I mean. Ladies want to get in on the action, and constantly playing the damsel in distress is just, well, distressing. We are kickass IRL!
Luckily, one awesome dad is changing things, at least for his daughter. Mike Mika hacked classic Donkey Kong to allow her to play the game as a lady hero. Read More

If you’ve ever read the comments on an article or blog post even slightly related to feminism, you’ve probably come across plenty of troll-y arguments.
“Feminists hate men!”
“You just enjoy being offended.”
“You’re being silly and overemotional.”
Now, you can turn all your comment-induced rage into fun with the Interactive Feminist Bingo Card! The card places troll-y comments on a five-by-five bingo card. When you click on a comment square, you mark it with a female gender symbol. Read More

A lot of things come to my mind when I think of James Cameron. Kickass director. Deep-sea explorer. But defender of female action heroines? Not at the top of my list.
Maybe it’s because of his notorious hair-trigger temper on set, or perhaps his string of infidelities and failed marriages--the two most high profile being to Katherine Bigelow and Linda Hamilton--but somewhere along the line I forgot that this was the man responsible for such legendary badass female characters as Ellen Ripley (from the Alien series) and Sarah Connor (Terminator). Some of you Internet users may be familiar with the ‘Idiot Nerd Girl’ meme. For those who are not, it's a meme depicting a young girl with thick plastic-framed glasses, on top of images emblazoned with a joke about what a poseur she is and how she doesn’t understand nerd culture. Examples include‘42 lolololol. Douglas Adams? Who is that? and ‘Monty Python is the funniest guy ever.'
These jokes are weak because they perpetuate the already annoying stereotype that women can’t hack it in nerd subcultures. Read More

Hey, I get it. Gadgets are expensive. An iPad will cost quite a hefty chunk of your paycheck. A computer ain't cheap, nor are gaming consoles. But even as I reluctantly forked over the dollars and cents for my MacBook Pro, all the while considering whether or not the Genius Bar can be haggled with, I got it. It's a computer. Of course it's expensive. What I don't quite get? Christian Louboutin's new tech-themed "Lady Peep Geek" embroidered pumps, which retail at the super affordable price of $1,695. Read More

One of the first comic strips introduced in my school’s comics course was Nancy by Ernie Bushmiller. My initial reaction? 'This confused, prickly-headed, hyphen-nosed child has no place in my heart!' I’m not a Sunday funnies kind of gal, so I didn’t understand what Nancy was trying to do. Is it supposed to be funny? Is it making some kind of point that I'm totally missing?
During the course, my professor introduced us to How to Read Nancy by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden. Read More
