On Tuesday August 26th at 7pm, nine famous comedians will raise money and awareness to help fight violence against women. Because DUH! Hosted by the Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, the event is presented by comedian Dean Obeidallah and global human rights group, Breakthrough. Obeidallah will perform alongside Todd Barry, Ted Alexandro, Wali Collins, Dean Edwards, Rob Paravonian and Ritch Duncan, Adam Wade and Pete Dominick. It’s summer. It’s hot. It’s the perfect time for a scoop of ice cream. Ice cream that donates a part of the proceeds to organizations in need? Great! Just give me the ice cream. But apparently buying ice cream isn't that simple when the aforementioned organization is Planned Parenthood. What’s the Scoop?, an ice cream shop in Portland, chose Planned Parenthood as its donation recipient during July; then, a pro-life website picked up the story and so began the barrage of harassment. I was always confused about my limited choices as a kid. Growing up with boy cousins, I remember wondering why I always had to be the pink Power Ranger, or the human girl from Ninja Turtles when we played with action figures. The only playscape I felt included in was Legos, and even still the main characters were mostly male, and they have become gendered in a way that limits the stories girls can tell during imaginative playtime. In honor of International Women's Day (IWD) coming up this Saturday March 8th, Catapult - a crowd-funding website championing the empowerment of women and girls - created a series of photos as a part of a visual campaign depicting the growing global epidemic of sex slavery, child slavery, and child brides.  The campaign created mock magazine covers, nearly identical to the well-known pop-culture magazines we see stuffed into our newsstands.
