I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the macabre and UK artist, Jessica Harrison's sculptures and drawings have tugged that heartstring perfectly. There's just something about porcelain statuette of a late Victorian woman delicately holding her own intestines, a skull lined with teeth, or a high backed chair that looks like it's made out of flesh that makes that little dark part of me smile. I hope that it makes you smile in that way too. Check her ... Read More
Do you like bicycles, art, and weird shit?  What a silly question, of course you do!  That said, you’re going to want to attend the silent auction benefit, "Bizarre! Weird Bikes! Weird Art!”  (plus, I think it’s common knowledge that anything with three exclamation points in the title is guaranteed to be awesome).  It all goes down tonight from 8-midnight @ Brooklyn Fireproof Bar (119 Ingram St.).    Not only ... For anyone who loves dolls, or just appreciates art in any form, they should direct their gaze to Marina Bychkova’s Enchanted Dolls. These life-like miniature works of art are no vinyl Barbie dolls and are, in my opinion, so much more than the polyurethane resin Super Dollfie ball-jointed dolls from Japan. Ms. Bychkova creates these highly articulated (18 movable ball joints), delicately painted wonders out of porcelain ... Read More
I found myself in the art/ photography publication section of a Borders this morning; where on the cover of Color Magazine the face of Kimiko Yoshida was discovered gazing back at me. The art nerd in me lost it to her technique: the neon green and highlighter yellow layered over a matte grey, the choice of tonal variations within a monochromatic field, the fact that somewhere in this latticed color landscape is a distinct, yet sinking, shape of a woman peering ... Like many people who frequently frequent the interwebs I have a long list of bookmarked websites that I visit daily. A good portion of these websites are webcomics.  So here are some awesome woman-made visual literacy chock full of wit, humor and a bit of naughtiness to stimulate (or melt) your brain.    Hark! A Vagrant! by Kate Beaton. Silly historical comics and other nonsensical things. Super sweet if you like historical ... Read More
My first impression of Louise Bourgeois was this picture. What I didn't know about her then was myriad, but I immediately hung the image by my desk at the Columbus Museum of Art. At the time it was more about supporting Robert Mapplethorpe who was having a pretty rough time in Ohio, but I was taken by this old lady in a feathered jacket tickling a roughly-hewn penis sculpture. Later that year I got myself a Desert Storm air fare and headed to Paris, where I got to ... Read More
May 15, 2010  marks the 40th International Fluevog Day! Each year, Fluevog Shoes gives away teal laces and 15% off regular prices to customers at retail locations across the globe. "I remember when we started with the teal laces in 1972. Well, actually it was just me wearing them," says designer John Fluevog. "You should have seen the people staring back then! Now, every person I see on May 15th is wearing teal ... Read More

Fantastic Voyage

Here's art that moved, and will move you: Last May, Brooklyn-based artist Swoon brought art to the sea by designing three handcrafted ships. Even more impressive, the vessels are made purely from recycled trash and materials. This past summer Swoon and a crew of more than 30 artists navigated their fleet from Slovenia to Venice, Italy, to invade the acclaimed art exhibition the Venice Biennale. The result was an imaginative, artistic endeavor - a dreamy, ... Read More
Photography is a timeless medium, with frozen moments captured in beauty and macabre. Planet Magazine shines a light on the devastating and the enrapturing work of Chris Jordan with his latest collection, "Midway." The series focuses on albatross birds in various states of decay, located in a remote sanctuary in the North Pacific. These post-mortem portraits are visceral and haunting with the suggest imagery - albatross chicks limply on the ground with the ...
