If anyone has some insight to offer on the eternal questions of life and love, it’s Amanda Palmer. The singer/composer/musician is a theatrical goddess, weaving fantastical tales in her lyrics and creating surreal spectacles on stage. She has clearly given a lot of thought to life and death, which is illustrated in The Killing Type (my favorite song of hers) where she chronicles her true story of mercy-killing a dying bird and how the experience of taking a life affected and wounded her. We’ve all been taught that drinking isn’t very ladylike: my mother cautioned me as a child not to drink before I was of age because she “embarrassed herself” in her youth. I never asked any questions, and I didn’t drink more than a sip until that lychee martini I had on my 21st birthday. Did you ever think you’d hear the terms “classy” and “jello shot” in the same sentence? The future is here! Yummy, alcohol-infused jello molds in twirly shapes, topped with fruit can change your college-style kegger into an upscale soirée. The atypical desserts are brought to us by blogger Casey Grim, who shares recipes on her site The Modern Gelatina. She uses vodka, gin, beer and more to make these excellent treats.
Grim's molds are often based on TV shows she likes, like Mad Men and Downton Abbey. Read More
Control Tonight, the new ad campaign from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, recently released an ad intended to curb binge drinking, using rape as the dire consequence of partying. However, rather than saying that alcohol impairs the judgment of both parties, (including the rapist) the ad instead uses the age-old framework that implies that rape is the woman's (and her friends') fault.
The ad features an image of a woman's nude legs on a bathroom floor with her panties pulled down to her ankles. The text reads, "She didn't want to do it, but couldn't say no. Read More
