I walk into the House of Vans Brooklyn Venue on a Saturday afternoon. A spattering of bass and drums fills the drafty warehouse full of skate ramps, expansive space, and a performance stage. On that stage is Kathleen Hanna and The Julie Ruin. The band is here to kick off their summer tour and they're in the middle of a soundcheck. Hanna greets me with a casual wave that melts away any nerves about speaking with this group of feminist legends.
After they finish up a few songs, everyone filters into the lounge. Read More

The beginning of The Punk Singer, a documentary that tells the story of Kathleen Hanna, OG of the Riot Grrrl movement, starts off with Hanna performing a spoken word piece in 1991. She says, “I am your worst nightmare come to life / I’m a girl you can’t shut up.” While far from a nightmare and more like our ultimate feminist wet dream, Hanna speaks the truth in that she definitely hasn’t shut up. The lead singer of Bikini Kill has a lot going on these days and we are pumped to hear more of her voice in 2015. Read More

The Julie Ruin has been forced to cancel tour dates on their North American and European tours in the upcoming months due to vocalist Kathleen Hanna’s ongoing fight with Lyme Disease. The singer first opened up to SPIN Magazine last year about her experience battling the disease, which required her to wear an internal IV inside her arm to more effectively deliver medicine closer to her heart. Hanna’s current treatment will take three months, according to a press release, and requires her to stay in one place. Read More

Don't lie – "Rebel Girl" was an important part of the soundtrack at your angriest teenage sleepover. Le Tigre helped initiate that tenacious (and in retrospect, highly dubious) clubbing phase. And now, some twentysomething years down the road, you're digging The Julie Ruin. You've gotten older, sure – but has Kathleen Hanna?
I don't think so! In addition to retaining her particular knack re: wearing-the-hell-out-of-a-printed-shift, Ms. Hanna's latest punk rock endeavor, The Julie Ruin, continues to churn out the hits. Read More

Like a fanzine come to life, "The Punk Singer," directed by Sini Anderson, is a tender and totally absorbing documentary portrait of Kathleen Hanna—beloved riot grrrl frontwoman of the bands Bikini Kill, The Julie Ruin and Le Tigre.
The film is brimming with expertly edited archival footage and behind-the-scenes glimpses of Hanna’s private life. Viewers not only get to watch her find her voice in the feminist art-punk scene of the early ’90s, but also bear witness to how she dealt with the misogynist backlash that ensued. Read More

The Julie Ruin is back with a spanking new video! Led as always by Kathleen Hanna, queen of the riot grrrls and legendary frontwoman of feminist punk bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, “Oh Come On!” is The Julie Ruin’s first single from their upcoming album, Run Fast.
The vid has Kathleen Hanna up in your face where she belongs, rocking out in front of some twinkling graffiti. Her powerful scratchy screams are tempered by the song’s mellowed-out chorus and flashes of your favorite deadpan punks. Read More

SPONSORED POST I’m puffing away at my desk, e-cig hanging from my mouth like some reporter from the 40’s in an old Manhattan newsroom, the loud AC unit keeping the early-Summer humidity at bay. We just closed the August issue of BUST and my bosses are on vacation for the week. I’m feeling good about the progress I’m making on the quitting angle. I’ve gone through the wracking cough that accompanies your esophagus getting accustomed to not having smoke shat down it every couple hours or so. Read More

It's been awhile since we've heard any new music from the feminist punk legend (half a year to be exact), but it was well worth the wait. "Oh Come On" is a high-energy, fuzzed out punk song that showcases the Bikini Kill members' talents that we've come to love so deeply. (Kathi Wilcox of BK is slappin' da bass, while drummer Carmine Covelli, guitarist Sara Landeau, and keyboardist Kenny Mellman cover the rest of the bases in the Julie Ruin. Read More

On Monday, Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin) had a radio interview on “Q with Jian Ghomeshi,” where she spoke about the importance of public mistakes, the resurgence of the ‘90s, and why she is still pissed off twenty years later (“Does anybody remember that the Equal Rights Amendment never passed?”).
In the wake of the reissue of Bikini Kill’s entire catalog, Hanna speaks a lot about the band’s goals, such as encouraging girls to get out and make their own music. Read More
