It's finally hot enough to hit the beaches, and it's got me dreaming about the old-timey Coney Island-- when girls' bathing suits looked like complicated costumes and the rides were terribly unsafe, but terribly fun. Maybe I'm just idealizing things, but the old Coney Island is something extra special that now only exists in history. I love the idea of beaches flooded with straw boater hats, bathing costumes, swimming caps, rosy cheeks, sheer Edwardian dresses, and wool bathing suits (things I'm thankful do not exist anymore). The all-female bartending competition known as Speed Rack is taking over Los Angeles for one night only. Speed Rack was created by Ivy Mix and Lynette Marrero of the New York Chapter for LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails), which works to collect drink recipes that were thought to be endangered or extinct. (Their mission is also to "dismantle the patriarchy, one drink at a time.") Top female bartenders compete in timed competitions at Speed Rack, a one-of-a-kind battle that highlights the top women in the industry. Read More
