Heads up BUSTies! Mother's Day is this coming Sunday, and although you shouldn't need another reason to celebrate the extraordinary maternal figures in your life, it's a great opportunity to show some gratitude. I mean, not many people can be tasked with changing your diaper, putting up with your teenage angst, listening to your long distance meltdowns, explaining how to fill out your W-2 AGAIN, coaching you through a six layer lasagna over FaceTime and still continue to shower you with infinite love and support. In Egypt and many parts of the Middle East, men do not speak their mother’s names aloud in public spaces. Doing so is considered wrong and makes the mother vulnerable to ridicule by others who may drag her name through the mud by making it a source of mockery and shame. Instead she is referred to as “the mother of (x),” and as time goes on, her name is forgotten and no one remembers it. She becomes literally defined by her status as a mother.
Thankfully, some are taking a stand against this habit. Read More

BUST cover woman Amy Schumer truly is the master of comedic timing. In the wake of Mother's Day, only she could come up with a sketch for tonight's new episode of Inside Amy Schumer that covers an innocent topic--the technological generation gap--with such fierce wit.
The sketch is as much about moms as it is technology. Schumer pinpoints all those wonderfully cringeworthy things moms do: touch your hair and clothes without your permission, ask for your help and then refuse to take it, and insist they have no clue how to do things you could swear you JUST saw them do. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their Mother's Day brunches and corny drugstore cards this past Sunday! Perhaps we could all alleviate our post Mamma's Day depression by appreciating how this aggrandized Hallmark holiday evolved into what it is today!
Mothers Day can be traced all the way back to a festival held by the Ancient Egyptians in honor of the Goddess Isis (pictured above) “patron saint of women and children.” This festival was later adopted by the Ancient Romans in order to mark the beginning of winter. These celebrations featured mainly female dancers and singers. Read More

Might be a nice surprise--it probably doesn't happen to her much anymore. Sure, sure, there's no way you left it to the last minute. You're not one of those kids. You definitely already got a card for Mother's Day.
Not. We've all been there: scrambling to make a sucky Mother's Day card at the last second, scribbling furiously as you hear mimosa glasses clinking in the next room. I usually end up with some bubble letters on the outside, something like, "YOU ROCK, MOM!" and then on the inside, maybe something that rhymes.
Well have no fear: BUST is here. Read More

This Sunday, May 11, we will celebrate the mothers in our lives, those women who, with the help of our fathers and other mentors, taught us how to be good people, whose shoulders we cried on and whose laughter brightened our days. In celebration of the holiday, international clothing brand Desigual released a mystifying commercial, one which many have found sexist and insulting. The ad presents a young woman trying on a slinky, colorful dress; catching her reflection in a mirror, she stuffs the abdomen of her garment with a cushion. Read More

Warning: This post may not be safe for work.
“Scars, rolls, bones, big or small breasts, wrinkles all tell a story,” says the photographer Jade Beall. Last summer, we featured Ashlee Wells Jackson’s remarkable and powerful series of photographs celebrating the post-pregnancy bodies of a diverse group of women; Beall does something similar in her new book A Beautiful Body Project: The Bodies of Mothers.
