Rookie seems to do no wrong, and the release of their new grrrl power anthem "Go Forth, Feminist Warriors" is a perfect example of their flawlessness.  Jessica Hopper, Rookie's music editor, hatched the idea for a feminist version of "We Are the World" in the same place she gets most of her inspiration; the shower. Armed with the killer idea, she enlisted the help of Katy Davidson and Marianna Ritchey from the song writing duo Lloyd & Michael. Sarah Dougher, a Women's Studies professor and  musician, contributed lyrics, as did the entire Rookie staff.   Women’s issues have been an intense topic in this election, and our rights are important, especially considering we make up more than half of the population. In this awesome new PSA, entitled “You Don’t Own Me,” a multitude of women stand up for--and lip synch!--to Lesley Gore’s song of the same name (Lesley herself appears at the beginning to 'approve this message'!). The Brooklyn-based indie pop group has launched a Kickstarter fundraiser so they can record their first full album, which Kate Nash will be producing. They’re writing and recording ten original tracks as well as some covers for the album. They also need funds to shoot the video for their first single, DUMB DUMBS, an “anti-drug/pro-candy anthem.” Featuring “a colorful, decedent Paradise Lost where drugs and lascivious acts are replaced by mountains of candy and swarms of offbeat characters”—too cute.
