In a recent documentary, the Image Activist Michaela Angela Davis, the founder of Un’ruly Antonia Opiah, and the model Autumn McHugh join the Miss Black Massachusetts Safiya Songhai and several other black women in a discussion and study of hair. In June, they hosted a public exhibit entitled, “You Can Touch My Hair,” in which women of color held signs inviting passersby to touch their hair. They chose to call it an “exhibition” to confront the way black women in America have been treated and examined by the white majority. Read More
There are few things more intimate and magical than a bathroom haircut from a friend, a relative, or a lover. The technique is also one of Jane Birkin’s secret beauty tricks. In a piece for The Guardian, she writes, “My best friend cuts my hair with kitchen scissors.” The 66-year-old fashion icon also likes to keep it simple with her favorite outfit, “an old pair of jeans, Converse and a man’s jersey.” She “[colours] her hair mousy brown and [wears] makeup only on stage. Tiana Parker, a young girl of seven, was cute as a button when she marched off to school this morning in Tulsa. She looked spick-and-span in her uniform, and her hair was aligned in perfect dreadlocks with a big pink bow on top. Tiana's father Terrance is a barber who, in his own words, "[takes] pride in [his] kids looking nice."
But Tiana left school this morning in tears. Why? Because the school felt she didn't look "presentable." According to the school's dress code, “hairstyles such as dreadlocks, afros, mohawks, and other faddish styles are unacceptable. Read More
Horse is woman’s best friend. There is something so magical about a horse; I will always remember my first horse show, the smell of de-tangler, and my pony’s perfectly stunning braids. The majestic, ethereal horse!
Since I have spent my entire life strictly following the beauty routine I learned from my horses (a hairbrush? what’s that?), I was thrilled to find out about some new horsie hairstyles. The Norwegian Fjord horse, a breed that’s been around for over four thousand years, has a great 'do. Read More
The completely magical, fantastical drag and burlesque superstar The World Famous *BOB* is hosting an Onstage Beauty/Drag Basics class at the New York School of Burlesque tomorrow, Friday the 28th of August at 6:00 PM. The class will be super fun and informative. I have often coveted the stunning beauty and poise characteristic of drag stars (I myself never wear make-up), and now we can all have the chance to learn the secrets of the biz, like how to design flawless wigs and apply pesky false eyelashes!
Plus: proceeds from the event will go to a great cause. Read More

Jaws dropped when pictures were released of Zooey Deschanel sans her signature bangs at the Met Gala. Not that it looks bad or anything…as if that ageless, blue-eyed dollface could look anything less than adorable. I don’t think it’s in her programming. But it still caused a universal double-take of, “Wait, THAT’S Zooey Deschanel?”
It’s as if the Zooey Deschanel persona is so defined that altering it in any way is nothing short of blasphemy. Let’s not forget the one time she pinned her hair into a side-parted bob and everyone lost their shit. Read More
