Our love for Carrie Brownstein burns brighter with each passing day. She’s a Sleater Kinney band member, an actress, a feminist, a former BUST cover girl, and a total bookworm. I even have proof! (And more proof! Further proof! Proof beyond the shadow of a doubt!).
So it makes sense she’d curate a reading list for One Grand, a bookstore-inspired project by Aaron Hicklin. Read More

Being a teenager can really suck. There’s going to be times when you don’t feel comfortable with getting advice from anyone, but sticking it out alone isn’t the best idea. A few people were lucky enough to have Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker help them out when that situation arose.
In this video from Rookie, the pair answers questions teens have about breakups, first kisses, and unrequited love towards your best friend. As if Carrie and Corin couldn’t be any cooler, they give really great, solid advice. Read More

“OK,” says BUST photographer Ramona Rosales to actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani halfway through their shoot at a bar near his home in L.A. “Now it’s time to bring the sexy.” Raising his extremely expressive eyebrows, the 37-year-old replies, “I thought I was bringing the sexy. Vanessa Bayer is at it again: In her show, Sound Advice, Bayer plays media adviser Janessa Slater, who confidently offers misinformed guidance to famous bands. In the most recent episode, Bayer "advises" our lady-loves Sleater Kinney. Check out the below video to see the SNL funny girl defend ex-wife flashers, poorly define the riot grrrl movement, and compare her guests to an all-girl Mystery Team.
We promise that if you woke up feeling the mid-week hump (it happens to the best of us), then nothing will cure you faster than watching Sleater Kinney explain that Susan B. Read More

THAT'S RIGHT. Abbi and Ilana met up with Corin, Carrie, and Janet at the Ace Hotel last week for a super sweet Q&A sesh (why oh why were we not in on this one?!). All five ladies are on top of the world right now, between a new season of Broad City and the band's U.S. tour and album (not to mention a little show called Portlandia you may have heard of).
Abbi and Ilana checked with the trio about No Cities To Love, their life on the road, and what it's like to constantly be compared with other girl bands. Read More

In honor of Portlandia’s 5th season premiere tonight (and for having our favorite feminist bookstore owners, Toni and Candace, kick things off with what's sure to be hilarious sketch) we pulled together a round-up of top moments from past seasons. From the duo's uber-local chicken escapades to Gathy’s murderous obsession with the band Catnap, there are just too many gloriously strange Portlandia instances to count—but hey, sometimes you've gotta try, right? Here's to Fred and Carrie! Long live the weirdos!
