Looks like in the game of capitalism vs. women’s rights, capitalism wins once again. American Apparel, who did a great deed by firing former CEO and founder Dov Charney after further allegations against Charney arose, backpeddled BIG TIME.
According to ABCNews.com, the “made in America” minimalist clothing company just rehired Charney as a “strategic consultant until the end of the investigation.” Charney’s fate as an AA employee, officer, or even CEO lies in the findings of the investigation. Read More

The online world has been a buzz with photographer, Petra Collins, and her menstrual blood-themed t-shirt. Collins designed the shirt, which is illustrated with a menstruating hairy vagina (vulva), especially for American Apparel. Commentary on the product has ranged from disgust to intrigue to even some who see it as pure feminist genius.

It turns out that Gothamist isn’t the only one who had a hard time swallowing the latest in American Apparel sexism. BUST dared to ask American Apparel for fair game with the nudity in the ad campaigns, and Swedish fashion designer Petter Lindqvist of byPM.se brought it!
Fashion blogger and company product manager Michaela Forni teamed up with Lindgyist to create a gender-role reversal ad for the product Pretty Vegas trench.

Damn it, American Apparel. Why do you make it so easy to complain about you? It seems they just can’t stay away from over-sexualizing the female models in their ads, while completely leaving the men out of the spotlight!
In their new ad campaign for “unisex” clothing, AA has managed to take flannel and denim away from the standard sexy cowboy motif and throw it on the half-naked super model. I don't know about you, but I don't feel "sexy" in my flannel. I feel more like "I just woke up at noon from a night out in Brooklyn, and don't ever want to leave the couch" in my flannel. Read More

American Apparel was looking for a model for the launch of its plus size line. They decided to have a contest where people could submit their own photos and other people could vote on it. The company used the tagline, “The Next BIG Thing,” which made a bunch of people mad. But one plus size woman decided to get even.
Nancy Upton, a size 12 actress and student from Dallas, submitted her own photos. All of them combined elements of food and sex. Some photos featured Upton covering herself in ranch dressing. Read More
