New Albums From Feeble Little Horse and Charming Disaster
Feeble Little Horse
Girl with Fish
(Saddle Creek)
Noisy, indie-pop, rock band Feeble Little Horse go from introspective simmer to rolling boil in moments on their sophomore release Girl with Fish; dread and dismay lurk underneath the most playful of lyrics, threatening to erupt. The Pittsburgh band of friends has fallen into an artistic equilibrium that feels honest, instinctive, and real to the right-now. Lydia Slocum’s low-key vocals pair well with her band’s turbulent, souped-up guitars and synths; she sounds as though she’s singing while lying in a sunny field, insects buzzing and wind gusting, unfazed. This is the sound of a generation finding zen in the chaos. – erin wolf
Charming Disaster
Super Natural History
(Self-Released)
The occult and the natural world go hand-in-claw for goth-folk darlings Charming Disaster, a Brooklyn-based duo who have been growing a cultish following since releasing their debut, Love, Crime & Other Trouble, in 2015. On their fifth album, Super Natural History, Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris offer 10 tracks laden with gorgeous harmonies, lilting guitar, and ukulele riffs, making it clear that we are all barely contained animals under the skin and yet somehow, our passions can elevate us into something more magical. Standout tracks include “Hellebore,” which sounds like an inventory of a for- est witch’s concoction cabinet, and “Bat Song,” a haunting lullaby with an infectious refrain. Super Natural History is a strange, unpolished gem of startling beauty and originality. – emily rems
