If you haven’t seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet, you better go do it. It’s an incredible feminist spectacle of an action film, and it was made possible in part by Dayna Grant, the stunt double for Charlize Theron’s character. In an interview for Playboy with Bust contributor Jenni Miller, Grant says, “I’m happy to be alive, to be honest. There was just such a small margin for anything to go wrong, but why it didn’t was because they hired the best of the best.”
Grant is certainly the best of the best. In the interview, she talks honestly about the grueling film process. “It was tough,” Grant says. ”I’m not going to say it was easy because it really wasn’t. Like the scenes where you see me under the truck holding on… I was under that truck for days and days going through the desert… We kept going, and they would keep shooting until I couldn’t hold on any more.” Tough doesn’t even begin to cover it.
We learn that Grant was pregnant during the filming of 2014’s Hercules. “Doing a fight scene is, as long as I’m not getting hit, then I can do that easy as anything, even if I’m pregnant,” she says. We’re speechless.
On the set of Mad Max, Grant says, everything was “on the run,” and the whole cast and crew “lived” Mad Max for eight months. “We go for the day. We don’t come back.”
We think Dayna Grant is the true action hero of this story. Read the interview here.
