Kesha has had one hell of a shitty week. Yesterday, she reached out to her fans on instagram for the first time since the announcement that she would not be able to break her contract with Sony and have to continue working with Dr. Luke. An overwhelming amount of love and support has been sent Kesha’s way by fans and fellow artists alike. She posted a lengthier statement on Facebook later in the day yesterday, not only to thank her supporters but to get real about what her case could mean for other women suffering abuse.
“Unfortunately I don’t think that my case is giving people who have been abused confidence that they can speak out, and that’s a problem,” she writes.
While the support Kesha has received is incredibly heartening, the fact that in court her allegations are not being taken seriously is part of a much bigger issue. Not only does this mean one young woman will be forced to work with her abuser, or be forced to continue working for the label who is supporting her abuser, it shows other survivors of abuse that if they choose to come forward, they may not be taken seriously.
In typical fashion, laws and the attitude of the court will lag behind popular opinion and feelings of common decency, but come on, let a young female artist continue to create work free from her abuser and in a place where she feels safe. Why is even that too much to ask for?
