Give Back Before Christmas: 31 Days of Giving

by Kat Hamilton

As Thanksgiving approaches, it is difficult not to get wrapped up (badabing!) in preparations and endless phone calls with the folks. Or if you’re like many of my friends in NYC, you might be preoccupied with finding a way to make the Holidays special even though you will be working like a champ. Cheezy as it sounds, half of the fun of the holiday spirit is helping others. Whether you are hosting a traditional turkey fest for your close friends or knitting a scarf for mom, it feels awesome to care for someone else. One way to make this years’ holidays count is to donate your time or a few dollars to a charity.

Truth is, most of us witness a lot of poverty around the Holidays. I see people on my block shivering and I can’t help but think about where they will be when I am sipping cocoa with my loved ones.

Here are some ideas of ways to donate to the greater good this year.

Donating Money!

The Holiday season is so food centric: Turkey, sweets, potroasts, mashed potatoes. The Hungerthon has tons of ways to help fill bellies this Holiday, from bidding auction style on celebrity meet-and-greets to donating the old fashioned way. You can even text to donate ten dollars. You can also start your own campaighn through Hungerthon and get creative. The Hungerthon end December 12th so check their website for more information before its too late!

Donate to the Philipinnes for Typhoon Relief: In the wake of a major world tragedy such as Typhoon Haiyan, most of us want to help but get overwhelmed over where to start. It is mind boggling to think about the millions of people, displaced from their homes, some without drinking water or food. Here is a helpful article on the various charities you can donate to and make a difference.

Donating time: If you money situation isn’t so swell, you can always donate your time. Volunteering for a food bank or a soup kitchen is a great way to get involved. Food Bank for New York City is always looking for volunteers for a variety of jobs. They need people to deliver food to shelters, man (or woman!) the soup kitchens, collect canned food, and much more. Here is a link to foodpantries.org where you can search for a food bank in your area!

Other ways to give back:

-Donate Thanksgiving Leftovers

-Find a clothing or toy drive in your area

-Volunteer for the ASPCA

-Donate blood

-Make cookie care packages for your local homeless shelter

Sound off with more holiday giving ideas and don’t be afraid to get creative!
