We’re big fans of Arrested Development here at BUST, especially of Alia Shawkat, who we featured on our cover back in ‘09. So we’re greeting the news that Arrested Development will return to Netflix for another season with hesitant excitement.
As you probably know, Arrested Development aired on Fox from 2004-2006, becoming a cult favorite but got canceled after its third season due to low ratings. It came to Netflix for a fourth season in 2013, to mixed reviews – the negative ones were due, in large part, to the lack of screentime the main characters had together. (For my part, while I enjoyed it overall, I definitely wished that the fourth season had included more of the Bluth family together as a whole!)
Variety suggests that fans may get our wish this time, writing that season five is filming four years after season four because of “talent scheduling” – and confirming that the entire series regular cast will return, along with creator Mitchell Hurwitz.
Even better – Hurwitz hinted that there would be some major Trump parallels within the Bluth family:
“In talks with Netflix we all felt that that stories about a narcissistic, erratically behaving family in the building business — and their desperate abuses of power — are really underrepresented on TV these days,” said Hurwitz. “I am so grateful to them and to 20th TV for making this dream of mine come true in bringing the Bluths, George Sr., Lucille and the kids; Michael, Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric, George-Michael, and who am I forgetting, oh Tiffany. Did I say Tiffany? — back to the glorious stream of life.”
Given the hilariously cutting references to George W. Bush and the Iraq war in the original series – some of which are now all-too-relevant again, like the “light treason” moment – we may need Arrested Development more than ever.
