7 Ways to Celebrate Tonight’s Blue Moon

by Alexa Salvato

Tonight’s sky will be lit by a Blue Moon, a term which actually just means it’ll be the second full moon this month. This isn’t as rare as the phrase makes it seem; blue moons occur about every two and half years. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth celebrating!

PSA: this is not what you should be looking for tonight.

There are so many ways to honor the Blue Moon. Here are just a few:

1. Make moon water to harness the full moon’s energies. There are detailed instructions here, but basically all you’ve got to do is leave some water in a covered bowl to bring in its spirit.

2. Look at/go into (safely!) an ocean. The moon controls oceans, so respectfully enjoying the ocean is respecting the moon as well.

3. Honor a lunar deity. Since the moon’s always been a pretty prominent feature in civilization, religions have been honoring it for thousands of years. A few moon deities are listed here, including Artemis (a Greek goddess), Chang’e (a Chinese representation of the moon), and Sina (a Polynesian goddess who lives on the moon). Sina’s myth is my personal favorite:

Originally, she lived on earth but got tired of the way her husband and family treated her. So, she packed up her belongings and left to go live in the moon, according to Hawaiian legend…. Once she had arrived, she was struck by the moon’s tranquil beauty and decided to stay.

There is a 100-percent chance I would do that on a bad day.

4. In that vein, certain pagan/Wiccan spells can only be conducted when the moon is full, so check to see if there are any you’ve been waiting to do! Here’s one.

5. I am completely obsessed with my monthly horoscope, and I tried to research if there is something specifically connecting a full moon the night before a new month, but came up empty.

6. Blue Moon beer is celebrating its 20th birthday today… Maybe you can score some free beer if you enter a bar with that kind of trivia! (Also, I am 20, and it is crazy to think that I’ve had the same life span as a beer company. I have never been in the world without it. Am I better for that?)

7. The Way of the Witch newsletter advocates absolute simplicity in your celebration: “Take time to enjoy and embrace the possibilities of the energy that this rare moon brings. Surround yourself with all things bounteous and plentiful as a reminder that, just like our mother earth, we have the innate ability to create big and abundant things from the smallest of beginnings.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

How will you celebrate the Blue Moon tonight?
