These 3 Plastic-Free Shampoo Bars Clean Up Nicely

by BUST Magazine

Bar Talk

CUTTING BACK ON waste has turned into a low-key obsession for me, and finding ways to eco-consciously tweak daily rituals is my new favorite game. (Except losing means accelerating the fiery implosion of our decimated planet, nbd.) I switched to using bar soap in the bathroom ages ago, but it only recently occurred to me that a bar could replace the big ol’ ugly plastic bottle of shampoo in my shower, too—you just rub the shampoo bar into your wet scalp and wash like normal. Turns out, there are a lot of options out there. I recruited my bff and sis-in-law to help test a handful of them, and here are our top picks.

Meow Meow Tweet Lavender Coconut Milk Shampoo Bar
$12, meowmeowtweet.com
Best packaging ever and also loveliest scent of the bunch. At 4.5 oz., this bar’s also the biggest and I’m pretty sure it will last forever? Our hair got greasy kinda fast after using this handmade-in-Brooklyn bar containing all kinds of oils (including coconut, castor, and hemp seed). But I think the blame lies more in the rinse deficiency of L.A.’s hard water. (The Meow Meow Tweet site recommends a weekly citric acid rinse to combat this, but tl;dt—too lazy, didn’t try.)

Lush Godiva Shampoo Bar
$12.95, lushusa.com
We stan a Lush shampoo bar (they offer 11 varieties), and you will, too, especially if you like intense scents. This 1.9 oz. bar lathers up real nice (probs because of the sodium lauryl sulfate, which gets a bad rap even though the Environmental Working Group says its hazard level is way low), smells like peak jasmine, and leaves hair soft enough to use without conditioner. You can also get a reusable tin to keep it in, which is excellent for travel.

Ethique Frizz Wrangler
$15.50, ethiquebeauty.com
Coconut oil and cocoa butter are two of the main ingredients in this 3.9 oz. bar, and those are probably the moisturizing superstars that do a lot of the frizz wrangling—this bar helped tame my big hair without making it limp. It even works without conditioner, though my tresses did get a little more tangle-y than usual.
