Let’s face it: summer network TV programming sucks.  This is usually the time of year when cable and the premium channels thrive and having a Netflix subscription becomes dire.  Fortunately, it appeared that Betty White’s new TV Land sitcom, Hot In Cleveland might be a promising new option.   The show’s debut last Wednesday pulled in a TV Land record of 4.75 million viewers, thus making it the most-watched telecast in the network’s history, according to Entertainment Weekly.   It also debuted to overwhelming positive reviews. Appearing tonight on HBO2 is Israeli filmmaker Zippi Brand Frank’s award-winning documentary Google Baby, about online shopping at its most bizarre.  The film opens with the idea that in the 1960s, the development of the birth control pill “took the baby-making out of sex.”  Today, with the development of advanced fertility treatments, the Internet, and the global marketplace the Internet facilitates, we have the technology to “take the sex out of making babies. I feel as though I should start with a declaimer:  Content in this blog may be unsuitable for children. Actually, if you’re a girl under the age of 18, please don’t continue reading. I don’t want to be responsible for exposing an entire generation of young woman to this. So just go do your homework or something.    It’s unclear whether this dance move originated in Brazilian nightclubs or their bedrooms, but I can only assume sex was initially involved. Read More

Every summer we are treated to a slew of supposed blockbusters specifically designed to knock off socks, or at the very least, give us somewhere cool and dark to sit for twoish hours. Certainly this season will be no different, judging from Hollywood’s attempts to revive The Karate Kid, Predators, Cats and Dogs (…?), the Toy Story franchise (!!), and The A-Team (which, I have to admit, just will not be the same without Mr. T…Bradley Cooper or not.). "Sex and the City 2" has had a lot of criticism and harsh reviews since it's release not even 36 hours ago. NPR's "The Takeway" contributor Rafer Guzman says SATC2 is bad for men and women because of it's unrealistic portrayal of, well, everything. BUST's own Emily Rems defends the SATC franchise, highlighting the importance (and feminist perspective) of women's friendships in the show and movies. Read More
Julia Sweeney has come a long way since the days of "Pat," the ambiguously gendered character she played on Saturday Night Live. Her personal tales of overcoming cancer, denouncing God, and adopting a child from China have been the substance of her material since 1995. Her recent TED talk, however, brought Pat back to mind. Sweeney is totally adorable, so the video is worth watching in and of itself. [video: 425x344] Yet I couldn't help but wonder what this would look like as a Pat bit. Then I got to thinking, surely this bit already existed. So I Googled. And Googled some more. Read More
This is one really awesome little girl. I  admire her enthusiasm. I don't think I could muster up nearly as much energy in the morning to be that positive.  Let's just hope she remains as confident and assertive through puberty. Read More
Corporate wisdom has long held that no one watches TV in the summertime so it's best to air re-runs. In recent years it has been a time to launch programs considered too experimental for the fall lineup. This has lead to massive, unexpected hits like, Burn Notice and True Blood. What does this summer have in store? In this episode of NPR's, "The Takeaway," BUST's own Emily Rems and TV blogger Delaina Dixon give us the scoop. Read More
See for yourself what roller derby is all about. Check out the Gotham Girls Roller Derby tonight at 11:30 pm on WNYE Channel 25, a broadcast of the Bronx/Brooklyn bout.
