  Austra (Toronto-based singer/songwriter Katie Stelmanis) took the stage at Brooklyn's tiny, Glasslands Gallery in a fairly undramatic fashion, yet conjured up some dark drama during an hour-long set that was moody, broody, and beautiful. Recently signing to Domino records, she was accompanied by several others on stage, compared to Austra's typical line-up of Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski, and bassist Dorian Wolf.  "Young and Gay" chimed with sparkling synths and pulsing drum beats as Stelmanis' chilling, opera-trained pipes belted out rich tones that ebbed and flowed. Bust favorites, Major Lazer, Santigold, and Art Brut, are playing the Downtown Music Festival next week. Between them, and the other artists on the line-up, these two shows are not to be missed! In partnership with The Fund for Public Schools, the Downtown Music Festival is fundraising for the first ever New York City Public School alumni organization. STRFKR Reptilians review

On their second full-length album, Reptilians (out on March 8th on Polyvinyl), Starfucker makes a solid attempt to gain notoriety for something other than their radio-unfriendly handle, but they mostly stay within familiar synth-heavy, dance-pop territory. First single “Julius” stands out for its glittery sound effects and infinitely hummable melody, while tracks like “Bury Us Alive” and “Astoria” are readymade for Friday nights at the hipster disco. Underneath all those fun little bleeps and boops, the lyrics are actually kind of depressing. Read More
Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts, and Dave Franco, brother of James Franco, both starred in MTV’s Supervideo. In an attempt to resurrect the music video, collaborators, MTV and Mean Magazine have created a Supervideo series using great directors, awesome music, big stars, and an artistic approach. Directed by Patrick Hoelck, this supervideo is a mini movie, rather than a music video, that plays over Cults’ “Go Outside.”  Roberts and Franco make a rather cute couple as they embark on a nightlong adventure of shopping, dancing, and kissing.
