With all the stress over the Wisconsin recall and the general election that we'll all be at each other's throats over at some point, it's good to bring a little levity to politics. Which is why when I checked out my newsfeed this morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find my president serenading me. Although not by his own free will, and instead by the genius of some editing masterminds, Barack Obama is asking us to call him...maybe? This video features a clever ... Read More
As a woman, I love when rich white men with a chip on their shoulders limit my reproductive rights and tell me that I can’t marry the woman I love. Since I’m still paying for Eve’s first sin, I haven’t yet had the chance to pray the gay away. But I’m sure I’ll be okay once I find a guy to keep me barefoot and pregnant. Those poor emotional creatures who say otherwise are simply distracted by “shiny objects”, because ... Read More
Today is a victory for equal rights in Massachusetts, where a federal appeals court just declared that  the federal Defense of Marriage act is unconstitutional on the grounds that it unfairly denies equal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.   The ruling is also a victory for the Obama administration, which had refused to defend that part of the 1996 law. Although the decision does not establish a national right to gay marriage, hopefully the ... Read More
There’s a woman in a small village who, against all odds, dares to challenge authority and ride a motorbike to fight crime. And no, I’m not talking about Lisbeth Salander. The 50-year-old Zarifa Qazizadah, who was forced to marry at 12 and now has 15 children and 36 grandchildren, is Afghanistan’s sole female village chief. That's a feat in itself, but the BBC reports that this brave leader has even remortgaged her home to pay for the posts and ... Read More
Unfortunately, many of us have experienced some form of street harassment – getting catcalled at, peeped at, or even groped in a crowded area. But there’s another kind of harassment that doesn’t receive quite as much attention, mostly because it’s so covert: the “upskirt” video or photo. The issue of upskirt videos was a pretty hot topic in the BUST office today, because one of our editors was upskirt-video'd recently on ... Read More
In September of 2010, Tyler Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington bridge. While no one can know what was going through his mind on the day he killed himself, many vehemently believe that it was the actions of his roommate, Dharun Ravi, that drove him to do so. Yesterday, Dharun was sentenced in a New Jersey supreme court to 30 days in prison for invading his roommate's privacy by using his webcam to expose Tyler having sex with another man ... Read More
It wasn’t enough for us to be pregnant all the time in Arizona. Now, we can’t get birth control in Kansas. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback just signed a bill into law that allows pharmacists and doctors to deny women contraception. Even more, the Heath Care Rights of Conscience Act allows them to do so on religious grounds, as long as they believe the birth control might “result in the terminating of a pregnancy.” So, basically, any woman ...   Yesterday, the state of North Carolina voted in favor of Amendment 1, a constitutional civil rights violation of a bill that bans same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state. The amendment formally defines marriage as between a man and a woman, but the rest of the language of the bill is notably vague, leading to concerns that the rights of unmarried straight couples would also be in danger. The concerns stem from the line stating, "Marriage between one ... Read More
And Ann Romney continued to prove just how out of touch she is with the American public when she said at the Connecticut Republican Party’s Prescott Bush Awards Dinner, “I love the fact that there are also women out there that don’t have a choice and they must go to work and they still have to raise the kids.” Repeat: “I love the fact that there are also women out there that don’t have a choice” This is coming from the ... In honor of Equal Pay Day tomorrow, the National Partnership for Women & Families has released staggering new data that illustrates exactly what women are losing out on due to the wage gap. In New York alone, women on average are paid 83 cents to every dollar paid to men. When the data is separated and examined more closely, women of color fare worse, with African American women earning 76 cents and Latina women 63 cents to every dollar. This sounds terrible, ...
