Now that it's not copacetic to throw the V-word around in the realm of American government, I decided to go ahead and make a short list of places where it is okay to use the word "vagina." Feel free to use this as a guide so that you don't startle any unexpected listeners. We don't know what the free use of anatomical terms could lead to, but some possibilities are: maturity, correctness, tolerance and, of course, anarchy.   1) The street. It's totally cool to use the word vagina when you're walking down the street having a conversation. Read More
We’ve already learned that it’s pretty tough to be a woman in Michigan these days. But it turns out that vaginas aren’t the only thing that makes state lawmakers clutch their Bibles at night. Last week, Michigan legislators were hard at work passing House Bill 5040, also known as “First Do Harm”. The bill would excuse religious students in the state from providing psychological services to those who don’t hold their personal moral values. Read More
Brace yourselves ladies, because things in Michigan aren’t looking so great for women these days. The state House of Representatives voted Wednesday on a dramatic anti-choice bill that would impose severe regulations on abortion clinics. While we agree it’s best for women to have access to clean and safe facilities, many Democrats in Michigan argue this bill goes beyond simple inspection requirements and instead aims to regulate the clinics out of existence entirely. If you've ever caught the tiny voice in the back of your head thinking to yourself that the 33 cent pay gap between women and men really isn’t all that big, first of all: you are the worst, and second of all: let’s see if you’re singing a different tune when you see all the cool things you could afford when those cents add up. The Center for American Progress plugged in the numbers and found some interesting results. In 2010 the median full-time working man took home $47,715 in earnings, while the median full-time working woman made only $36,931—77. Rock The Slut Vote!

BY Intern Tessa in Feminism

Calling all sluts! Need to register to vote? Look no further. You can Rock The Slut Vote right here. This is a movement which was created to “fight the GOP effort to bully, subjugate and silence women,” and “wrest the power from the word slut and help women get informed, get involved, get registered and vote”. The word slut was used publicly by Rush Limbaugh earlier this year to describe Sandra Fluke, who testified on behalf of women’s right to contraception at a Congressional hearing. Read More
Now that you've watched Barack Obama get down with the music stylings of Carly Rae Jepsen, it's time to get back down to serious political business. Or not so serious, depending on how much you believe the democratic party's attempt to pass a bill in the senate that would help close the wage gap between men and women in the US.   The paycheck bill would ban companies from responding against any workers who inquire about pay disparities. It would also allow employees to sue for punitive damages if they find any  "broad" differences in compensation between male and female workers. Read More
With all the stress over the Wisconsin recall and the general election that we'll all be at each other's throats over at some point, it's good to bring a little levity to politics. Which is why when I checked out my newsfeed this morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find my president serenading me. Although not by his own free will, and instead by the genius of some editing masterminds, Barack Obama is asking us to call him...maybe? This video features a clever splicing of his press clips to the tune of Carly Rae Jepsen's viral hit Call Me Maybe. Read More
As a woman, I love when rich white men with a chip on their shoulders limit my reproductive rights and tell me that I can’t marry the woman I love. Since I’m still paying for Eve’s first sin, I haven’t yet had the chance to pray the gay away. But I’m sure I’ll be okay once I find a guy to keep me barefoot and pregnant. Those poor emotional creatures who say otherwise are simply distracted by “shiny objects”, because everybody knows we’re about as important as rims on a car or a Zales commercial. Read More
Today is a victory for equal rights in Massachusetts, where a federal appeals court just declared that  the federal Defense of Marriage act is unconstitutional on the grounds that it unfairly denies equal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.   The ruling is also a victory for the Obama administration, which had refused to defend that part of the 1996 law. There’s a woman in a small village who, against all odds, dares to challenge authority and ride a motorbike to fight crime. And no, I’m not talking about Lisbeth Salander. The 50-year-old Zarifa Qazizadah, who was forced to marry at 12 and now has 15 children and 36 grandchildren, is Afghanistan’s sole female village chief. That's a feat in itself, but the BBC reports that this brave leader has even remortgaged her home to pay for the posts and cables needed to provide the Naw Abad village with electricity. Read More
