  Our media culture is so totally awash with scripted depictions of the high school experience, that it's a little uncomfortable how obsessed we are with such an awkward and confusing time in our lives.  The list is truly extensive: 90210, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Friday Night Lights, Saved By The Bell, The OC, Awkward, Freaks and Geeks, Glee, Mean Girls, Clueless, The Breakfast Club, Never Been Kissed, to name a few (I'm sure you have some in mind to add). Mika Brzezinski, co-host of the MSNBC show Morning Joe, tries to share a voice of reason about the media's over- stretching of the missing Malaysian flight, but is continually thwarted by co- host and general jerk, Joe Scarborough.  In the clip, while Brzezinski is visibly annoyed at Scarborough’s newest speculation that the plane could be somewhere other than the Indian Ocean,  she waits her turn to state her opinion that it is time for a topic change. The founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps Sr., died of natural causes at 84-years-old on Wednesday, March 19th. Phelps and his small Topeka, Kansas-based congregation, which is largely comprised of his own extended family members, is best known for leading repugnant anti-gay protests at public events such as funerals of AIDS victims and deceased members of the armed forces. The church was founded in the 1950's and has been spewing nonsense for way too long. Read More
  Reportage aims to give readers and viewers the impression of being there; we consume news because knowledge of goings on in faraway places grants us the illusion of actually participating in significant events. The most famous photojournalistic images either capture something so momentous or historic that they make us forget that we weren’t actually there when it was taken. The well-known “Kissing Soldier” photo is one such image; although the woman didn’t know the man at all, we’ve constructed a national narrative about a love story that never happened. Read More
  In an admirable attempt to protest the ways in which vaginas are overly sexualized in porn and totally censored in mainstream media, The University of Sydney’s student paper Honi Soit recently published an issue with a brave and totally rad cover featuring the naked vulvae of eighteen students. Okay, they weren’t totally naked. The school’s Students Representative Council and their lawyers instructed the paper to obscure the images with black bars placed over particularly "explicit" regions of the images. Read More
