Heads up BUSTies! Mother's Day is this coming Sunday, and although you shouldn't need another reason to celebrate the extraordinary maternal figures in your life, it's a great opportunity to show some gratitude. I mean, not many people can be tasked with changing your diaper, putting up with your teenage angst, listening to your long distance meltdowns, explaining how to fill out your W-2 AGAIN, coaching you through a six layer lasagna over FaceTime and still continue to shower you with infinite love and support. Meghan Trainor's single "All About That Bass" is currently number two on Billboard's Hot 100 and her music video has gotten a lot of attention for her commentary on "bass." As a piano player, I do not choose between, nor discriminate against, bass and treble, musically or body-wise. There is a lot of body shaming that goes on for all women due to photoshop, and one's ability to genetically produce a booty should not affect whether they are deemed beautiful. This is probably why so many people have commented on and parodied the song. That and it's catchy. Read More
I’ve always thought that once I get my hands on a time machine, one of my initial trips will be to 1979 to see if my mom would think I was cool enough to hang with her in Des Moines. “If I Had Known My Mother Back Then” is a more accessible experiment in the same vein. For her latest project, artist Danielle Delph edited herself into photos of her mother as a child and teenager. The result is touching and the pieces are seamless: it is not even immediately obvious who is the mother and who is the daughter. Read More
BUST cover woman Amy Schumer truly is the master of comedic timing. In the wake of Mother's Day, only she could come up with a sketch for tonight's new episode of Inside Amy Schumer that covers an innocent topic--the technological generation gap--with such fierce wit.  The sketch is as much about moms as it is technology. Schumer pinpoints all those wonderfully cringeworthy things moms do: touch your hair and clothes without your permission, ask for your help and then refuse to take it, and insist they have no clue how to do things you could swear you JUST saw them do. The premise of the New York Times’s recent piece on the stay-at-home husbands of female Wall Street execs was a must-click the minute I heard about it: the so-called “house husband” is one of my favorite answers to the nebulous question of how to Have It All. The article focuses on a growing class of families in wealthy suburban areas that are putting aside the traditional nuclear family structure for a more progressive and profitable alternative. Gwyneth Paltrow talked about something unrelated to $250.00 sea salt and boy was it awesome.  In a recent interview with Red Magazine, Paltrow addressed the criticisms she, along with working mothers 'round the world, receive for the way they choose to balance their life. Check it: "It makes me cross. I personally think that the work-life balance for a woman should be exactly what she feels is right for her. And nobody else can set her time schedule. And nobody else can tell her how many hours a week she needs to devote to this, that or the other … fuck what anybody else says. Read More
Dearest BUSTies, I have a huge confession to make: The Real Housewives franchise comprises all of my favorite TV shows. Usually, people think of the shows as dated because they portray these women as vapid and totally clueless (granted, they often behave that way), but the series does chronicle shifts in how housewives as a social group are perceived. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recently amended a rule that prevented stay-at-home parents from obtaining credit cards.Intended to prevent people from falling into debt, the rule required credit card companies to take into account the applicant’s individual income rather than household income. It eventually garnered disapproval due to the unfair restrictions it placed on spouses who were full-time parents.  Holly McCall, member of the group MomsRising. Read More
