San Francisco-based band Be Calm Honcho makes easy, breezy indie-pop that’ll make you anxious for hazy summer, and saying “fuck you” to all that work you should be doing. At times, the quartet echoes sounds of classic blues bands, with guitarist Alex’s jazzy solos and lead singer Shannon’s powerhouse vocals, that channel the smoldering, mystical stylings of Alex Winston. It's a wonderfully dynamic sound that you have to hear for ... Read More

Stepsister duo Skating Polly are wiser than most people would expect from two teenagers who first started playing music together in a jam session at a Halloween party. Kelli, 14, and Peyton, 18, formed in 2009 and have been making self-proclaimed “ugly pop” songs like nobody’s business. At times tracks are quieter, poppier, or ‘90s alt-punk-inspired, but all of them are solid, whether the message is serious (“Ugly”) or silly (“Carrots”). The ... Read More
Okay found it, could this be what we’ve have been waiting for?! Has anyone else imagined that this is what New York sounds like for a girl, a mostly confident, sometimes insecure, maybe nerdy, kinda hippie, wannabe punk, super sweetheart, no-nonsense kind of girl?!
The Prettiots will make you feel like you can have a perfectly crafted cutesy exterior, while secretly wanting to burn your frenemy’s house down. Too much?
I mean it’s ... Read More

You might recognize Eleanor Friedberger as one half of experimental indie-pop duo the Fiery Furnaces. After the band went on hiatus in 2011, Eleanor didn't stop singing, and began working hard on her debut solo album, Last Summer. After the success of the NYC-inspired record, she set out to create a collection of songs that are more relatable and universal than her last. I'd say she hit the nail on the head with Personal Record (out June 4 on Merge), where you'll ... Read More
When it comes to music festivals, there's always Coachella, Austin City Limits and SXSW, but there's one festival I look forward to every year and that's NYC Popfest. If you're a fan of indie pop or just like the idea of a smaller-scale festival with amazing bands, it's definitely a festival you should explore. It takes place May 30th-June 2nd with about 30 bands playing in a variety of NYC venues.
Friends and music lovers gather from all over the world for ... Read More

If you like mysteriously dark yet candy-sweet indie pop, Chaos Chaos’s S is the EP for you. Chaos Chaos is comprised of multitalented Brooklynite sisters Chloe and Asy Saavedra, formerly child stars of the indie pop band Smoosh. They play an array of instruments, including synthesizers, acoustic piano, many different types of drums, and saxophone, and they also use experimental vocals. Like BUST favorite Amanda Palmer, they funded their album ... Read More

Have you heard of Sweater Girls? Honestly, I hadn’t until I gave their album Sweater Girls Were Here a listen. Their latest album is a collection of cutesy songs about young love, heartbreak, and things like “riding bikes through the park,” as heard on the third track, “Pretty When You Smile.” If you like to hum along to the smooth and indifferent vocals of Diana Meehan of Best Coast, or have ever found yourself ... The Brooklyn-based indie pop group has launched a Kickstarter fundraiser so they can record their first full album, which Kate Nash will be producing. They’re writing and recording ten original tracks as well as some covers for the album.
They also need funds to shoot the video for their first single, DUMB DUMBS, an “anti-drug/pro-candy anthem.” Featuring “a colorful, decedent Paradise Lost where drugs and lascivious acts are replaced by ... Read More
