Twitter brings celebrities closer, removing the filter of publicists and managers with sometimes disastrous results…and sometimes amazing ones. Yesterday, celebrities Tweeted and Instagrammed their Halloween costumes like the rest of us, sharing some adorable, hilarious, and frightening pics with the rest of the world.
The best of the bunch has to be Neil Patrick Harris’s and David Burtka’s family’s adorable Wizard of Oz costumes (above), ... Read More

Having lived on the east coast my whole life, I think I know how to handle a hurricane. Just when I thought we were in the clear for this year’s hurricane season, along comes Sandy in her modest cardigan and purity ring, ready to cause some trouble at Rydell High (and by Rydell High I mean the Mid-Atlantic). This hybrid storm, (“part tropical, all beast” as the Philadelphia Inquirer put it) comes just days ahead of Halloween, much like the early ... Read More

Your friend is cooking up a Halloween costume that involves cardboard, a yard of metal sheeting, and a dozen wire hangers; it may look cool, but there’s a good chance she won’t be able to sit down or hold her drink all night. You, on the other hand, will be sitting pretty in this simple mask, which you can make from household supplies in only an hour or two. Keep the rest of your costume minimal—and keep your hands free for holding your beer.

Have you picked out a Halloween costume yet? Maybe you’ve already chosen an awesome feminist costume (maybe a SCARY VAGINA?), or maybe you’re DIY-ing it. Maybe you’re getting sexy and adding some ears, à la Mean Girls. As long as you’re not dressing up as a “sexy body bag," if you’re feeling good and having fun, you’re probably all set. Except for one thing…
DON’T WEAR A RACIST COSTUME.

Halloween is getting closer and closer, and what better way to celebrate than watching a horror film – or making one. From now through February 28, 2013, female horror filmmakers can submit their work to Viscera Film Festival. Bonus: unlike most festivals, Viscera does not charge submission fees.
In summer 2013, Viscera will showcase the winning films at the Bloody Carpet Ceremony in Los Angeles, CA. There will be special guest speakers, award ... Read More

Rather than being a sexy piece of fruit or a sexy nurse or a sexy table (or this year’s new low: the “sexy body bag”), make a statement this Halloween.
1. Pussy Riot: Get a couple of girlfriends together, put on some colorful ski masks, and run around causing trouble! This costume is cheap and easy to put together, would be easy to recognize, and is totally topical.
2. The Atlantic cover about women having it all: Just dress up in ... Read More

I’ve always been a hot sauce kind of girl, so when I came across a recipe for homemade sriracha, I knew I had found my 2012 Halloween treat. Sriracha is the perfect alternative to cookies, cakes, and candy. Give something to your friends that they won’t already have entire boxes of, and that won’t go stale. A baby jar of homemade hot sauce truly is a gift that keeps on giving—the peppers will keep kicking long after the meal is ... Read More

Picking a costume for Halloween is hard work, if you take it seriously (which I do, thank you very much). Finding the perfect balance of funny, interesting, and comfortable to walk around in is incredibly difficult. And forget buying something at a store if you want to avoid tacking the word “sexy” to the beginning of your costume and freezing to death.
That’s why the blog “Take Back Halloween!” is so incredible. Its mission is to “take back” ... Read More
