Another Halloween has come and gone, which means that now there is only one thing to do: Monday-morning celeb costume stalking. From Kim K. going as herself, to Viola Davis' daughter wearing the cutest costume in the world this year hit a new high of creative with a side dish of hilarious (here's looking at you, Katy Perry). Check out the celebs who did Halloween extra right:  1. Ellen DeGeneres as "Karla Kardashian," the long-lost member of the fam.  2. Josh Duhamel and Fergie as Karl Lagerfeld and Choupette (his cat) 3. Read More
Last night’s Grammys were full of moving performances, funny and awkward moments, and empowering red carpet interviews—but obviously here at BUST we were on the lookout for feminist moments, and we've narrowed it down to our top five. This last year has shone a lot of light on domestic violence and assault issues, so we’re dedicating our first three moments to the three people that rose to the occasion about brought awareness and empathy to this year's Grammy awards. 1. In November I responded to one of Seth Rogen’s tweets that invited fans to watch his latest comedy “The Interview” with him over beer and popcorn. Rogen, beer, and popcorn all sounded like a good time to me, so needless to say- I was in. I didn’t know at the time that I would be watching a movie that would then be cancelled from theaters all over the country with Sony Pictures shelving its release entirely over a series of threats from Internet hackers. White people everywhere are tired of hearing about “cultural appropriation.” So what if my favorite pop star Katy Perry is wearing cornrows in her new video?! The only thing that is keeping racism alive is people of color talking about racism! Well, I’m here to debunk all of the whitesplained myths about cultural appropriation, and to tell you why it is indeed racist for Katy Perry to dress up as a geisha or to have large butt mummies dancing around her during a live performance. The so-called feminist magazine, Playboy, recently published an article written by a dude who argued that Neko Case is, “too smart—and frankly too old—to be one of those shiny young pop starlets who sing about love with superficial life-or-death stakes."  Earth to everyone; she is not a commercial pop star. So, why compare her to the likes of Katy Perry or Beyoncé?     The problem with the article is that it places women into one generalized category. Read More
Julie Mollo is a Brooklyn-based fashion designer with the cutest retro clothes in town. She started sewing custom clothes and costumes for Katy Perry while still a college student, and has since expanded her business into street-ready skirt sets that even non-rockstars can totally rock. Read on for the story behind Julie's kooky-yet-cute creations. Read More
Katy Perry just changed her mind about feminism. Or maybe she’s been inspired by her UK counterpart Lily Allen, who also has something to say about the word. Or, did Hollywood finally make a Feminist Theory class a requirement? Doubtful, considering Perry’s track record with cultural appropriation, sexual objectification and reinforcement of fetishes. I’m starting to think that feminism is just good for publicity or something... Read More
Katy Perry isn’t necessarily known for her modesty.  On her candy-coated Teenage Dream cover, she posed naked amongst fluffy pink clouds. On occasion, she’s also been known to shoot whipped cream out of her bra. But the increase in female nudity in pop has her concerned.    In conversation with NPR’s Scott Simon, the singer said, “females in pop-- everybody’s getting naked [...] I’ve been naked before but I don’t feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed.   The hyped up new Katy Perry Album Prism dropped today following an IHEARTRADIO concert that streamed live on Yahoo last night. The pop star's previous record had five number 1 hits. No matter what you think of Prism, you can’t deny that Katy Perry is definitely doing something right. At first listen, I’m not enamored with Prism.  The tracks and the production on Prism are so similar that it is hard to differentiate between the songs. Maybe Prism is going to be one of those records that isn't about the singles, but about the collective vibe they create. Read More
Kathy Griffin is far from subtle; seriously, you don’t want to get on her bad side. The saucy comedian will skewer anyone who crosses her with her quick wit and biting tongue. Turns out, she won’t only stick up for herself. Womankind, Kathy Griffin has our backs.    And who has crossed some awesome lady celebs this week? No surprise: Perez Hilton. We all know about that time he totally violated Ke$ha’s privacy by posting intimate pictures of the singer for the whole world to see. Read More
