Tasty Thursday Review: Brussel Bytes

by Mariana Garces

Sometimes we get some interesting snacks in the office when we least expect them. Today we got a little hungry, so we ended up trying these freaky little things; more specifically, we tried the Chili Pumpkin Seed Crunch flavor of the Wonderfully Raw Brussel Bytes (made with real brussel sprouts!). Why not!

These… clusters… describe themselves as “nutrient packed bytes of goodness.” “Goodness” is not usually what I care about in a snack, but it doesn’t hurt that they are raw, gluten free, and vegan.

The back of the bag defiantly says: “MOVE OVER KALE! BRUSSEL BYTES ARE HERE!” Yeah, Kale, who the Hell do you think you are?? Oh, wait, just kidding, there is kale in these things too.

Mariana: I grabbed a chunk of this stuff and it was so many tastes and textures combined that I didn’t know what to think. So I ate some more… It’s an interesting flavor combination. Kind of spicy and very savory. Very weird.

Blog intern Sam was hesitant to say the least, but I bullied her into trying them.

Sam“Brussel sprouts are usually really gross, but these, they are just… interesting. Hmm…”

Before Sam could take a second byte, I was hogging the bag and stuffing my face, still unsure of my final opinion.

Melissa: “They tasted vaguely curry-ish, sorta like I’d just eaten a handful of small twigs with masala spice mix on them. They were not what I’d call delicious. But they didn’t make me want to rinse and spit, either.”

Our Bust magazine co-creator and Creative Director, Laurie, came around to try a bite too. She basically said: “These just taste like kale chips.”

Senior Designer Lauren says: “They’re good to replace crunchy snacks. Like if I was craving something salty.”

Fortunately, this brand also makes “Coco-Roons,” which are a sweet, coconutty alternative if you’re not feeling like something salty and crunchy. Check them out if you can find them at your store and tell us what you think!
