Speedy Ortiz Is Bringing You More Of That 90’s Vibe You Crave: A Bust Review

by Mollie Wells

Speedy Ortiz’ new album Rabbit Rabbit is a tale of cycles. Named after a monthly incantation, this fourth album finds songwriter Sadie Dupuis using the band’s signature acerbic wit and fuzzed-out hooks to interrogate all manner of repetition: from the circular dynamics of power and violence to the very nature of a Speedy Ortiz song itself. On its face, Rabbit is classic Speedy—playful, hooky, inflected with ’90s power-pop—but each song unwraps some new surprise, building and breaking into sudden singalong choruses and intricate, angular breakdowns. It’s an evolution that looks both forward and back—and will excite Speedy Ortiz superfans and newcomers alike.
