Alongside the topless portraits of young women under 40 years old who have survived breast cancer, the words “breast cancer is not a pink ribbon” speaks volumes.
Fashion photographer David Jay shot the series of large-scale portraits, titled The Scar Project, to give an often-unseen look at the women who have battled early onset breast cancer, and who bear the scars to prove it.
The project gives a face to the thousands of women under 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, as well as a glimpse inside the reality of the disease. In a world in which we are bombarded with pink ribbons and “save the boobies” bumper stickers, these photographs are a reminder that breast cancer research is to save the lives of women, not just their breasts.
