Maha Rose The Center For Healing In The Brooklyn Community: BUST Interview

by Janeth Gonda

It’s no secret that living in NYC can be extremely demanding and emotionally exhausting. Luckily for Brooklyn, the Maha Rose Center For Healing opens its doors with loving arms, offering a wide variety of services from Reiki, meditation, acupuncture, breathwork, tarot readings, healing workshops and so much more.  Lisa Levine, the mastermind behind Maha Rose, organically created the center as her love of connecting shifted from art and parties to mediation and healing. She originally lived in the unnamed space slowly transforming it into the safe haven it is today.

What inspired you to start Maha Rose?

When Maha Rose first started, it was just a meditation circle in our living room. I was designing jewelry and living with a steady rotation of artists, musicians, and yogis. I had gotten into yoga and wanted to learn meditation, but I didn’t want to travel to Manhattan at 7 a.m. So I asked a teacher that my friends and I had met if he would come to Brooklyn and teach us, and he kindly said yes.

Do you use all the practices that you guys offer in your own personal life?

Kind of, yes. At least bits and pieces of things I’ve learned from the different modalities and teachers. Reiki first, [then I started] breath work, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, meditation, laughter yoga, crystals, astrology… I’m a believer in all of them.

What would you say is the key to peace of mind? Is there any particular practice you would guide someone towards who came into your shop looking for comfort?

Trust, surrender. It’s not something that is gained overnight, but with practice over time peace of mind is gained. Working with a practitioner who has practice and experience under his or her belt can help us to connect to the peace that exists within us. It’s already there we just have to redirect our energy and our attention to connect with it and connect with it more and more. Guidance and support is helpful on our journey. We go to healers and teachers to help us to see our blind spots. There are things we might not notice on our own, that someone else may be able to see and help us to work with, moving more quickly through rough or challenging times.

Tell me a bit about how your relationship with Dharma Punx and how it began. I found Dharma Punx about 3 years ago and it has seriously saved my life, time and time again.

In 2012, when I was still in acupuncture school, Maha Rose was sharing space with Kusala Yoga, a neighborhood yoga studio run by Melissa McKay. She had been working with Dharma Punx and invited them into the space. She moved on to other endeavors but Dharma Punx has been with us ever since.

What advice do you have for the female-identifying youth when it comes to achieving their goals and making their dreams come true

You can do anything you want. Believe in yourself. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Don’t worry about what others are doing or thinking. Find people and friends who are into what you are into. We’re creating new realities every day. Everything can change. Everything is always changing. How you felt yesterday doesn’t have to be how you will feel today.
