Light Her (Labia) Menorah?

by Debbie Stoller

I’m sure it was created with the best intentions.   I’m willing to give CBS the benefit of the doubt on that. But honestly, their new public service announcements suggesting that husbands give their wives the gift of a pap smear this holiday season are really…..ridiculous.

Never mind the fact that if this is really what I were to receive from the man in my life as my Hanukkah gift I would be sorely disappointed, and  how is my guy supposed to know  my schedule well enough to schedule any kind of doc appointment for me, let alone know the name and number of my gyno, but this ad is so odd and off-putting I don’t really understand what the real purpose of it is meant to be. Are women not to be trusted to make their own gyno appointments? Is this something we should start trying to schedule around the holidays in particular? And honestly, schmear?

Yeah yeah yeah vaginas are funny and gyno appointments are hilarious and pap smear is just about the grossest name for a simple procedure I can think of, and I think that these CBS ads were trying to make light (ha!) of a serious matter, possibly to make it something more easy to discuss, but still, these PSA’s really bug me.

What do you all think? I give you both Jew and Gentile versions, below:
