Female Rap Duo Fights Rape In India With Mad Rhymes

by Natasha Rodriguez

Feminist activists, Pankhuri Awasthi and Uppekha Jain, just performed an important rap against rape culture in India. On their YouTube page, they describe India as “a nation that is 1,000 shades of fabulous and yet there’s still 999 issues that hold us back.” The duo, who call themselves BomBaebs, speak out against India’s current antiquated mindset that accepts and condones rape and misogyny in their powerful video.

In an interview with BBC, Awasthi and Uppekha admitted that India’s regressive mindset won’t change overnight but they believe that highlighting these attitudes is an important part of the process. Drawing from their personal experiences, including being groped on public transportation, slut shaming, gender discrimination, and the objectification of women, this rap touches on the daily frustrations of life for women in a culture that does not always respect a woman’s right to her own body. Check out Bombaebs’ awesome rap below!
