girli’s New Album Brings Your New Summer Anthem

by Kathryn Hensch

“When we touch we fuck to fuck the patriarchy”

On her new album, Matriarchy, girli covers many facets of LGBTQIA+ relationships with one constant—catchy hooks that give listeners the irresistible urge to dance. With each song, whether about sex (“Crush Me Up”), sadness (“Made to Break”), self-love (“Happier Her”), or sapphic empowerment (the title track), Matriarchy is a glittery, electro-pop banger that begs to be played at maximum volume. Lyrically, the record is girli’s most personal and unflinchingly honest work yet. It’s a celebration of being a queer woman and giving a proud middle finger to patriarchy, homophobia, and anything else that dares stand in the way of her happiness.
