Coney Island’s 35th annual Mermaid Parade is coming up again, and this year they’ve got a kick-ass king and queen. Blondie’s Debbie Harry and Chris Stein will join this year’s parade at office Queen Mermaid and King Neptune _ the highest honor the parade has to offer.
Beginning at 1pm on June 17tg, the parade starts at the corner of West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, makes its way through the boardwalk and ends at Steeplechase Plaza. The procession is a yearly tradition that celebrates mythology, artistic seaside rituals, and a love for all things mermaid. Fully equipped with floats, antique cars, marching bands and thousands of participants dressed in full mermaid attire, it’s something you won’t want to miss. Coney Island USA founder and Mermaid Parade founder Dick Zigun told The Coney Island Blog, “Our BLONDIE King Neptune and Queen Mermaid represent authentic NYC arts from East Village CBGB punk, to current cutting edge Coney Island.”
