On our way out of the BUST office this past Friday afternoon, interns Maura, Ginny, and I were remarking on the difficulties of feminist blogging, namely that “We can only say ‘I hate Rush Limbaugh’ so many times!”
Since calling Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a slut, Limbaugh’s been all over the news because of his ludicrous defense of his actions, and buzz has continued over the number of advertisers who’ve dropped his show. I’m certainly not the only one who’s totally sick of hearing about Limbaugh at all. Let’s just ignore the creep!
But then I saw this fantastic video from musical comedy duo, the Reformed Whores. In response to what the Huffington Post calls Slut-Gate 2012, the Reformed Whores provided an anthem for all the “sluts” out there–educated women who proudly take responsibility for their sex lives and speak their minds. In the same vein is the Sluts Unite campaign, an initiative started by condom company Sir Richards that moves to “take what was intended to be a hateful, derogatory word and change it into something positive through the power of the collective.” On their website, you can take the “Sluts Unite Oath” and pledge to respect and stand with fellow “sluts.”
Personally, I’m not such a fan of the re-appropriation of a word with such a negative history. I’d just be happier if we did away with judging people for their sex choices at all. (Optimism, thy name is Kerishma.) What do you all think?
