Brooklyn Bike Patrol Provides Free, Safe Trips Home For Women

by Tess Duncan

In the summer months, when sexual assault highly increases, we ladies have a right to be concerned about getting home safely at night. Luckily, a group has formed to help combat this issue for those who live in Brooklyn by escorting women home from their subway stop for free fifty-free! Brooklyn Bike Patrol will also get you home safe and sound from bars, bus stops, restaurants, and friend’s houses in your neighborhood.

All you have to do is call BBP (718-744-7592) 45 minutes before you’ll get to your subway station and one of BBP’s volunteers will meet you there. BBP is usually available seven days a week, but since the service is free, they’re currently only available Friday through Sunday, from 10pm-4am. But still, they can make it out to 58 various train stops in Brooklyn, including Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Sunset Park, Kensington,Windsor Terrace and Carroll Gardens, Bestuy, Crown Heights, Borough Park, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Bushwick, Williamsburg and Red Hook. And in case you’re wondering about who exactly is allowed to escort you home, you can trust that all volunteers are background checked by the 72nd Precinct and their photos are on BBP’s Facebook page.

Unfortunately, BBP’s president and founder Jay Ruiz has recently suffered a series of heart attacks. Ruiz is uninsured so friends have started a GoFundMe to help cover his medical expenses. He’s doing better and is home now but you can still help the man who’s been making Brooklyn a safer place for women everywhere over here! We’re pullin’ for you, Jay!
