Eva Longoria, Maria Teresa Kumar, and Lucero To Receive Hispanic Heritage Awards

by Solange Castellar

On September 5th, “Desperate Housewives” actress Eva Longoria will be receiving this year’s Hispanic Heritage Award, as presented by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. What’s amazing about this is that Longoria is one of three women who are receiving this award. Voto Latino CEO/President, Maria Teresa Kumar, and Actress/Singer Lucero will be receiving the 26th Hispanic Heritage Awards as well.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation announced the winners this past Friday. The other recipients include filmmaker/actor Diego Luna, chef José Andrés, musical group, Lost Tigres del Norte, race-car driver Pablo Montoya, and Miami-Dade County Public School superintendent, Alberto Carvalho. While the award ceremony will happen on September 5th in Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, it will be broadcasted on September 15th on MundoFOX. The broadcast of the award ceremony kicks off this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month.

This past month, Longoria was honored with the National Council of La Raza and Telemundo’s “ALMA de Tu Mundo” award. As Latinos Post notes, Longoria was honored for using her fame and talent to help Latino communities, and creating awareness through various philanthropic causes. Despite the fact that Longoria was born in the U.S., her parents are both Mexican, and she feels very connected to her Latino heritage.

In March of 2013, Elle Magazine named Maria Teresa Kumar one of ten most powerful women in Washington D.C. Kumar’s organization, which was co-founded with actress Rosario Dawson, was designed to bring Latino voices to political issues. By doing so, the non-partisan organization has effectively made their stake in the media, and has engaged Latino youngins about American political issues. Fun fact: Eva Longoria is one of Voto Latino’s celebrity supporters!

Lucero, a Mexican born entertainer began acting at the young age of 10 on the children’s show Alegría de Mediodía, and went on to star in the 2010 telenovela hit, Soy Tu Dueña. She sang to John Paul II in 1997, released multiple albums like Mi Destino and Cuango Sale Un Lucero, hosted the Latin Grammy Awards, and was a featured judge on La Voz México

Being an American born Latina myself, Eva Longoria is one of my many Latina role models, so I’m deffo gonna check this out! I’m not quite sure if my cable subscription has MundoFOX, but it’s my September mission to see this broadcast!
