Jennifer Lopez’ New Film Atlas: A BUST Review

by erin maxwell

Netflix continues to flex on their competition in the streaming wars with the big-budget sci-fi summer entry Atlas, starring A-lister Jennifer Lopez in the titular role. In this thriller, Lopez plays Atlas Shepherd, a counterterrorism data analyst with a deep-seated distrust of artificial intelligence who agrees to go on a mission to capture a rogue android. The daughter of the scientist who developed the experimental tech that created the robot, Atlas must confront the ghosts of her past if she wishes to succeed. But when the mission goes horribly wrong, it is up to Atlas to overcome her past trauma to become the hero and save the day…and possibly all of humanity.

Co-starring Simu Liu as Harlan Shepherd, an insurgent who turns against mankind, and Sterling K. Brown as Colonel Banks, the commanding officer in charge of the mission, Atlas is a futuristic look at the dark possibilities of artificial intelligence.

The pic is directed by San Andreas filmmaker Brad Peyton, who saw the film as more than just an adrenaline boost for sci-fi fans: “Atlas is told through the lens of a woman who’s learning to trust after undergoing a trauma that’s upended her life. It’s a reminder of how we have to have deep, meaningful relationships in our lives in one way, shape, or form. That you can’t do everything by yourself; you have to choose to trust people at a certain point and let them in.”
