Your Sister's Alright

BY Web Intern in General

Everybody needs a sister-- at least if the results of a new study from the University of Ulster in Ireland hold true. Researchers at the school recently asked 571 people ages 17 to 25 about their lives and discovered that the ones who grew up with sisters tend to be happier and more balanced, according to the BBC . People with brothers, on the other hand, had more 'distress.' 'Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families,' said professor and head researcher Tony Cassidy. 'However, brothers seemed to have the alternative effect. Read More

Bye bye, Sweet Tater!

BY Web Intern in General

This recession hasn't deemed fair to many of our beloved boutiques; keeping their heads above water to be true to their dreams and their following, only to be held down by these ugly times. Not cute. It's the sweet, quaint shops that flood our senses with endless walls of creative one-of-a-kinds and vintage finds that lift our spirits when we walk away with something special. Speaking of a boutique as such, Sweet Tater in NYC will be closing shop on April 19th. Read More
Some of the peeps I heart most use Twitter to interact with their devoted audiences. One such Twitterer who has my heart a-tweepin' is Neil Gaiman, BUST's most recent Boy Du Jour. One of his fans created the most excellent image you see here, in the spirit of the equally adorbs Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling. I can't find who did it since I found it on Neil's Twitter a week or two ago, and that Neil sure does love to Tweet. (Sandman bless him!) If it's yours, speak up in the comments! Note that this pic is from this issue of BUST, and he's wearing an incredibly righteous Amanda Palmer tee-shirt. Read More
One more state has OK'd same sex marriage. Iowa's Supreme Court ruled that a law from 1998 saying that marriage could only be between a man and a woman was unconstitutional. The ruling goes into effect in 21 days. Vermont and New Hampshire both have gay marriage acts in process, but governors of both states oppose them. -Liza (graphic via www.locallender. Read More

OMG Shoes!

BY Web Intern in General

There are few things in life that I enjoy more than cute shoes, none of which important enough to relate here. So imagine my delight when I discovered this party tonight for the launch for the book Beth Levine Shoes by Helene Verin. Widely hailed as the 'First Lady of American Shoe Design', Beth worked under her husbands label to create some of the most innovative and popular shoes of the 60' and 70's, including Nancy Sinatra's boots that walked all over you in her hit single These Boots Are Made for Walking. Mother Knows Best

Got any plans for Mother's Day? Take yourself, your mom, your friends, your kids, whoever, on a trip to Washington DC. There is a lot going on Saturday May 9th-Sunday May 10th that any peace-loving woman should be excited to get in on. CODEPINK, a 'women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life-affirming activities', is hosting a 24-hour vigil from May 9 to May 10 in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House.    Are you into fusion food? If you are then you should definitely check out Fish 'N' Chicks . Think of it as surf and turf with a god complex. Fish 'N' Chicks is a dish composed of ground chicken meat, mixed thoroughly with finely chopped fish, all battered and pan fried into a McNugget style bundle of delight. The master mind of this innovation, Brooklyn artist Nate Hill, professes that, 'All of my work is about the idea of imitating God.' In the nearly alchemical melding of chicken and fish, a new meat is created from an animal of human imagination, not divine design. Read More
video from current.com Catfish grabblin, also known as 'noodling', is a type of fishing practiced primarily by southern badasses. It involves wading through red-watered lakes, blindly sticking your hand in murky holes and feeling around for a 50 lb catfish to wrestle into submission (and later dinner.) I first found out about grabblin from Okie Noodling , a 2001 documentary with a soundtrack by the Flaming Lips. Girls Gone Grabbling is the lady's answer to Okie Noodling. This DVD series was independently produced by a husband-wife team of grabblin enthusists. Read More
To follow-up on yesterday's blog about the outrageousness of Prime Minister of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai (pictured) rushing the bill of legalizing spousal rape and severely limiting women's rights, it's no surprise that he's been getting some serious international heat about the controversial bill. And thank goodness! According to a handful of international sources such as UPI.com , MalasiaSun. Read More
When I heard the TV show Drop Dead Diva had been picked up by Lifetime Television, I was uber excited to hear that someone, anyone, was planning to air it, because the always fabulous Margaret Cho co-stars in it. Creator Josh Berman originally sold it to FOX, but it fell by the wayside during the WGA strike. It's now set to hit Lifetime this summer. Read More
