As a So-Cal suburban teen, I was a die-hard Sonic Youth lover. So when Kim Gordon launched X-Girl clothing in 1994 I became an insta-fan. My favorite T-shirt was electric blue and said X-Girl in neon orange and pink and wearing it immediately helped me separate the kids I'd like to know from the ones I wouldn't: every jock would say 'X-Girl, does that mean you're a dude now?' while every music nerd would give a knowing nod of alliance.            I tend to get super nostalgic for the accoutrement of my youth (Feather earrings! Slap bracelets! Hypercolor!), so I was overjoyed to see a few versions of the classic 80s fan earring over at Fred Flare. These things were majorly coveted by my grade-school girlfriends, and only the most fashion-forward among us even dared wear them to class. Of course, back then fashion-forward meant gross, don't talk to her so my nostalgia might be a little misplaced. Whatever. (Left: Versailles Fan Earrings. Right: Antoinette Fan Earrings. Read More
This morning, my main man Barry speedily enacted legislation reversing the Supreme Court ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear , in which employees (like gender bias plaintiff Lilly Ledbetter) lost their right to their day in court for ongoing wage discrimination. 'By swiftly signing the Ledbetter legislation into law, President Obama insures that employees, regardless of their gender, race, national origin, age, or disability, are protected from the additional burdens of pay disparities during an economic recession,' said Caroline Fredrickson, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. Raised In Craftivity

BY Susan in Arts

Raised in Craftivity, curated by Mara Elena Buszek, is a long-running show at the Wignall Museum at Chaffey College in California . It started up just last night with a curator's walk and reception. The exhibit features artists who work in typically craft-oriented media like ceramics, beadwork, woodwork and knitting. These are usually disdained as being 'feminine,' 'domestic' and 'amateur,' but today, this kind of craft media is being embraced and subverted. Some of the artists include Elaine Bradford, Orly Corgan, Carolyn Hopkins and the KnittaPlease group. Read More

Blowfish balls

BY Laurie in General

The New York Times reported today that 7 diners became seriously ill after eating blowfish testicles in Japan recently. The police said the restaurant did not have a license to serve the Japanese delicacy and are investigating. (Note to self: Do not ingest fish balls. Ever.) I'm curious if anyone has ever tried the blowfish? Is it really that good that you would risk paralysis? Enquiring minds want to know. Via NYT. Read More
