Why Are Hundreds Of Women Calling This Guy To Tell Him About Their Periods?

by Becky Brown

Last month, Indiana passed HB 1337, an anti abortion bill so restrictive, even many pro-life Republicans are against it.

Unlike other anti-abortion restrictions, Indiana’s is unique in that it’s not only extremely costly and requires an ultrasound with audio of the fetus’s heartbeat followed by an 18 hour waiting period before the procedure, it will also ban women from seeking an abortion based on fetal diagnosis, prohibits doctors from knowingly aborting fetuses based on physical abnormalities by making it a felony AND requires women to pay for the cremation or interment of aborted fetuses. What the FUCK!?

Under HB 1337, abortion is prohibited based on the “(1) race, color, national ancestry or sex of the fetus; or (2) a diagnosis or penitential diagnosis of the fetus having Down Syndrome or any other disability.” South Dakota is the only other state to prohibit abortions based on physical diagnosis. The bill was approved by the House of Representatives in a 60-40 vote, and Republican Governor Mike Pence, who has since signed the bill into law, is a “strong supporter of the right to life.

Is this real life?

HB 1337 is so appalling in the way it targets women’s health and makes clear that a woman, once pregnant, is nothing more than a vessel.  It forces women to carry potentially dangerous pregnancies to term and in turn, discourages women from being open with their doctors out of fear that they will lose the right to make decisions over their body.

“Politicians are not medical experts, yet politicians have written these reckless laws as a part of a broader effort to end access to safe, legal abortion, plain and simple.” – Planned Parenthood President, Cecile Richards.

In response to this horrible violation of women’s rights, the women of Indiana have been calling Governor Pence’s office and informing him the details of their menstrual cycle. If he’s so interested in women’s bodies, he ought to know just how bloody the women of Idiana’s periods are, right?

Twitter and Facebook accounts Periods for Pence were created to assist in contacting Governor Pence as often as possible.

As of this afternoon, Governor Pence’s phones have been disconnected, but the women of Indiana should not be discouraged! There is still email, facebook and twitter.

It’s clear that Governor Pence’s legacy will be this horrifying anti-abortion bill, and it’s consequential uproar.

Stay mad, Indiana.
