We Are So Excited For This New Ava DuVernay Movie For So Many Reasons

by Erika W. Smith

Selma director Ava DuVernay just broke a major glass ceiling. She just became the first black woman to direct a blockbuster with a $100 million budget, and the third woman overall to do so, according to Vulture.

Another reason to be excited: the giant blockbuster film that DuVernay will be directing is an adaptation of one of our favorite books ever, A Wrinkle In Time. Written by Madeleine L’Engle in 1963, the sci-fi classic follows the intelligent, awkward and unpopular Meg Murry as she, her genius little brother Charles Wallace, and her dreamy classmate Calvin O’Keefe are taken on a journey through the universe by three mysterious beings in an effort to find Meg’s father.

A Wrinkle In Time was made into a TV movie in 2004 and it was bad. Really bad. So bad that, when Madeleine L’Engle was asked if it “met expectations,” she responded, “Oh, yes. I expected it to be bad, and it is.” Ouch.

Given that endorsement, it’d be hard for DuVernay to do worse. But, thanks to the brilliance of Selma as well as pretty much everything else she does, we have very high hopes for this movie.

According to Variety, Oprah will play Mrs. Which and Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee is writing the script. This just keeps getting better and better.

DuVernay tweeted about the historic nature of this news, writing, “Not the first capable of doing so. Not by a long shot. Thanks to @DisneyStudios for breaking this glass with me,” adding, “A shame. Hollywood and audiences have missed some wonderful voices. High hopes for change.”

A Wrinkle In Time has no official release date yet, but we know this: We’ll be at the movie theater on opening night!
